if somebody has there real pic on public display does it put you off adding them if you dont like what they look like ? or should everybody use a fake pic
Before adding someone, I tend to look at their profile, I don't really care what they look like, it's their personality I'm appealing to, not their face. Should everyone use a fake pic? Some do, for various different reasons, I think if you're adding someone based purely on looks, it's rather shallow. If I like someone's personality, either from posting in same threads as them, or reading their stories, chances are I'm going to have a better friendship with then than I would if I treated them purely like a gorgeous piece of meat.

To be honest, unless you're some supercool person who wouldn't care if their lush profile was found by people that they know, I wouldn't suggest putting up your real picture for all to see. I love lush, but some people I know would give me a lot of hassle if they knew about it.
We are what we are and hiding it from your friends and people who know you is like being ashamed of that I know people hide it for different reasons but I am not ashamed of what I am or what people think

This. I could potentially lose a job I work very hard to get if my profile were to be exposed. Frankly I see no upside to putting my picture here. I have many good friends who have also chosen to use avatars and I respect them for it.
I use an avatar myself. I would be crazy to show my face on this site. It's so funny how many people call me fake cause of my avatar. I just tell them duh did you read my profile you idiot of course my avatar isn't me lol.
As long as a person is kind to me, I have no problem accepting their request. I don't mind if the picture they use by their display name is them or just something or someone they like to look at.
I won't share my own face with any but a small handful of people who have earned a deep trust from me, and even then I hate sharing it. My avatars have been made for my by a lovely friend who took things that I love and made them into a badge for me.
Whatever you look like, whether it's you in your picture or not, it can never be a substitute for the way you interact with a person, and it's the interaction that I care about.

O_O that's not you in your avatar? I always thought you were a sweet, talking flower <-----disillusionment sucks
I don't post my pics for professional as well as personal reasons. If I wanted people to know what I looked like, I'd have a whole gallery full of nothing but pics of myself. But it's not something that I feel comfortable doing. So I'll never post a pic of myself on here. I've actually thought about doing it. And not to seem conceited or shallow, but I receive enough unwanted attention as it is. I'd hate to be hounded once people know what I actually look like.
I had been using the default avatar since I joined L.S. A day or two ago, I posted a real pic of myself, cropped to the point of 'plausible deniability'. In this day when some employers are demanding employee's Facebook passwords, other's use key-logging software, facial recognition software and violating our privacy in ways we don't even know, a healthy sense of paranoia might just keep you safe and happy. When I was cropping my photo, I pasted it into the Google Images search box to make sure that it didn't pop up as a photo of me tagged on some friend's (or my) Facebook account No one on earth can reasonably expect that their 'digital footprint' is private or untraceable anymore. Somewhere, someone has the chops to find any of us if the reward is worth the effort.

Fuck'em and the horse they rode in on, I say.

Yeah, actually I know who a few people here are in real life and what they look like just because we have mutual friends on Facebook and the like, and it's not hard to figure out when people tell you their real first name...if you've ever posted a real pic of yourself on the net, you should be aware of that...if it really matters to you, like you're running for president or something...
I actually use a fake avatar because I don't want anyone to know what I really look like...but, I think it's time I come clean...
I found this alarming...... I posted my avatar in google images search.... yep, there I was. I then posted a pic without the wig..... zilch
And also, there are websites like tineye, where you can do a reverse image search. All you have to do is right click the pic and post the url into the search box, and BAM! If your pic is on the net, most likely it'll show up. Scary shit.
in my last job i did a web search on myself periodically just to make sure i wasn't out there.... what i found is that there is lots of information on my real identity but a nice proportion of it is wrong...
when i came to lush i did have a picture of my pierced nipple up... but i didn't think i was in danger of having anyone with whom i worked recognizing that...
oh and one more thing.... if you give enough information in your profile i can find out who you really are... and i have done that in a few cases (and it saved me from bad things)... just so you know... i am not the only person around who has that talent.
I have two photos in my profile check them out. They are the real me and my alter ego. I have been around and have had my face published in magazines, online and other places. In some circles I am very well known. If I gave my real name and you googledme you would see a lot. As others have pointed out if someone wants to know they can find out. I usedto be a public speaker who traveled the world. In fact my story "An Evening in Paris" really happened to me. I know the technology that is out there because I workedon some of it. I also was a member of the University of California San Diego board for curriculum in computer science for many years.
I hope you like my photos. My alter ego is probably the most rewarding persona I could be. It gives me great pleasure. I know people love me for it. If people I know see me here I would not be ashamed. They should feelm ashamed for themselves for thinking that. I am what I call an 'old fart'. That is me and my ideals.
For me, it's an issue of maintaining my anonymity on the outside. I have real pics of me on my profile but only viewable by friends. I'm pretty guarded with that. This is a secret part of my life and for the time being needs to stay that way. But I completely understand for more uninhibited users to put their real pics on their profile.
Mine is not of me... But then if you read my profile, you will know that... I do have a couple of pics that I share with friends... I think what is most important is honesty... Some people have come here and posted pics from the internet, claiming it is them. Lies and deceit only lead to anger and resentment...
To answer the question, Determining who i add is not made by what avi they have chosen to post... I dont add people to my friends list unless I have first spoken to them and feel comfortable with them... It is the person's mind that matters, not what picture they have chosen to display...

i don't use my real pic for icons anymore. i have shared (on other sites) my pic with those that i trust and have built a friendship over. other than that, i just use icons that i like and reflect me or my mood. i keep my profile information real, or as much as i am comfortable sharing about me anyway. =)
