boy this conversation is getting old. i'm not picking on you for bringing it up--it's a perfectly legit question--i've just been a huge fan of this movie (and series) for 20+ years and i've answered the question ad nauseam, ha.

it's not a christmas movie. it's a movie set at christmas. there's a difference. to be a christmas movie, it would need to use christmas in a way that's integral to the plot or theme. it doesn't really do either. the exact same movie could be taking place in july. there are plot points, of course, that relate to christmas--the building is largely empty because it's right before christmas--but that's a minor point that could be explained just as well any other time during the year. i've seen the movie 100+ times, and i can't think of a single thing about it that requires even a christmas setting, much less a strong relation to christmas.

you can also argue that it's a christmas movie because of some of the themes--the importance of family over career, for one--but you could make the same argument about a thousand other movies that have nothing to do with christmas.

in short, no. it's a fantastic movie, i totally get why people associate it with christmas, but it isn't even kinda a christmas movie.
Come on, what says Christmas more than single-handedly saving your wife from terrorists in a multi-story office tower with lots of shooting and booms?
Excellent film. But no, not a Christmas movie.

Go for A Muppet Christmas Carol, one of the best ever.
Yes it is. And I watch it every Christmas Eve or Christmas day
