I've finally succumbed and bought myself an iPhone 4.
I have a business phone, but that's purely for business, and I need an iPhone to test our new mobile platform when it's completed. Gav has a Samsung with paranoid android, so we can test both major mobile operating systems.
What apps are fun / useful / recommended?
I really wanted to do a lush app, but apple are rather anal and don't allow anything adult related.
You'll think I'm a sick, twisted lunatic for it, but look up an App called Dismount. Endless fun for the possible sociopaths.
When I showed it to several peers at a conference last year they all questioned why someone in my profession would use it.
I had no good answer for them other than it relieves stress wonderfully.

Oh Nicola, welcome to the darkside.
A few of my favorites are:
- Cam Card, it allows you to use your camera to take a picture of a business card and it imports it into your contacts
- Bump, you can share your contact information with other iPhone users by just "bumping" phones
- , very similar to BBM uses data to send text messages vs costly text messaging charges
- RMaker, you can use any song in your iPod and create a ring tone. You can cue the song at any time, it's pretty cool
Hope this helps!
Like Dude said, is awesome (you can use it on any smartphone) and it means that you can IM with anyone in the world, send vids, pics etc and it will hold your messages for you until you log in...
The Facebook mobile app is quite good if you use FB
I have Rowmote - which I can use as a remote control for my macbook and imac (needs wifi to work though)
Find iphone is useful in case you lose your phone
TuneIn Radio is superb - like a DAB radio - you can record on it and also search for songs playing and stuff
PS Express is awesome, like photoshop - you can edit pics - there's a free and paid for version - in the paid for one (it's not expensive)R it has a timer and stuff - pretty cool and you can upload straight to FB
A word game I quite like is Textropolis and also Fishtropolis - you just need to make loads of words - simple yet addictive...
My mum plays wordswithfriends and keeps trying to get me to do it, but I haven't succumbed yet, although I expect I will!
Regarding battery life - if you switch off bluetooth and wifi when you don't need them - because the phone will keep broadcasting/searching for them, you'll see a big improvement - also there are some apps which, even when running in teh background) seem to use lots of power - one I play, Pocket Frogs (don't bother, it's not actually very good) uses tons, so I try to remember to switch it off when I'm not using it...
best tip I can give you is to carry a power lead with you in your bag and get a charger for the car too!!
Also, the rubbery covers are better because if you drop teh phone it really helps to protect not only the phone, but the screen... I'd make sure you have insurance as well...
Hope that helps!!
Update: OK I gave in to words with friends and it looks quite good...
Also, just downloading an app called Star Walk - it's £1.99. It allows you to point your phone ot the sky and it will map out constellations in real time, show you when satellites etc whoosh past and stuff - my wee sis has it on her android phone and it's pretty darned cool!!
I must be the only person here without a smartphone or an iphone.
With my old smartphone, I had a few local apps called Bus Tracker, Train Tracker and RedEye Mobile.

The flashlight is one of those apps I use a lot. Such a simple app but very useful.
Hipstamatic makes you feel like you're an artist with your iPhone camera. Kinda pricey but worth triple what you pay.
Also those phone tracker apps... They are fake and no matter what number you put into it, it will just pinpoint your own phones location... But here is the fun part. You wait until someone is just chilling with you and you ask them their number and enter it into the app and show them the app pinpointing the exact location you both are relaxing at... Watch them freak... Dont tell them you are tricking them. It's so much fun. I do it to my underlings at work so they think I know where they are at whenever I check up on them. Ruling through paranoia. It's the best.
Angry birds. Every single version can be very addictive. Also Shazam is awesome for when you want to find out a song that is playing
I have 2 new apps that i just LOVE
Apps Gone Free: it lets you know which apps that you had to pay for them before, have gone free or have an special offer of one day free download! they dont always have the best apps but sometimes you just score big time!
TeeVee: It lets you know when the shows you like have new episodes. I have some series that i just love, but i watch them online and im very busy during the day or going out or whatever so im never sure if there's a new episode or which was the last one i saw, so this app its perfect for me. It lets me know when they are out and you can mark which was the last episode you saw!! The only thing bad is that its kind of new so they still dont have all shows but the most popular ones!
Shazam - Ever hear a song you like on the radio, TV or anywhere a song is playing ... and you want to know the name or artist? Well, Shazam will find out for you. (I admit there have been a few songs where it didn't know) ... but I listen to a lot of new artists.
If you hear a song you like, or are just curious about ... hold your iPhone's mic to the speaker. Give it a moment, and the song will appear (name, artist and album).
It does more too .. It might give you the link to the video on youtube. It sometimes gives you the option to purchase the song .. bookmark it .. etc. You can email it to a friend too.
I LOVE THIS APP
Tripit is pretty cool.
You can have all your travel plans in one place:

Anything to do with travel
IMDB - It's a movie database .. and gives background information about the actors. Rates the movies, and gives a rundown.
Flashlight - I agree with Magical_Felix ... Great app, and I use it all the time.
Find my iPhone - Yes, I have had to use it ... and it told me where it was. You need to have access to your email in order to find your iPhone, and once you do ... it will give you the location. Lifesaver!
Kindle - Read books, and access to the kindle store
Yelp - Lets you find things around you ... things to do, places to eat, drink .. and be Merry!
If you run or cycle, iMapmyride or iMapmyrun (you could just use one for both) are both great. I clip mine into a caddie on the handlebars of my bike, switch on Winamp with my music going, and Im set. It tracks everything. You can of course get the arm strap for running. Both great ways to track your fitness and log your workouts. The website is just awesome too. And once your done you can use Instant Heart rate to get your bpm. It seems pretty accurate.
I love the Foxtel Guide app. Great for us here. You can also record with your IQ.
Other handy apps are Ebay, Bluetooth File transfer, FX Currency, ConvertPad, PaperToss (you'll lose sleep with this one), SoundHound, Kayak (Flights, car hire, Hotels, flight tracker) are just a few I have used in the past.
Battery power is an issue because the phone is constantly talking to 3g. the iPhone does have a bad habit of letting programs run once you think you have closed them. Android, because its paranoid, closes those once they are inactive for a certain time. Pretty clever actually. I love Android, but I get annoyed when they constantly advertise apps on TV for your iPhone when there are more phones using Android. But anyway, it is what it is.
