I lead a not-so-secret life as an itinerant florist, working shifts in the floral shops of assorted grocery stores and high-end floral specialty shops in the area. My mum was a florist so I sort of grew up working with flowers.
Of all of the flowers I handle, my top five would have to be the Stargazer lilies (and derivatives thereof--like Starfighters and Sorbonne) because of the amazing scent; freesia, because of the scent; French tulips, because of the spectacular head size and amazing range of colour; field and/or greenhouse tulips, because of the colours; and peonies, because of the scent and because they are one of the very few flowers that are truly seasonal--they cannot be forced or hothoused.
Roses are fine, but unfortunately, due to the fact that roses have been specifically bred for colour for over a century, very few rose varieties easily available commercially still have an actual scent. Thus the florist's trick of mixing in other flowers, especially lilies and stock, when make rose arrangements or bouquets--those other flowers are what will give the end piece scent.
PSA: Daffodils are pretty, but never ever never mix daffodils in an arrangement with any other flowers. Daffodils are the pretty little serial killers of the flower world; their bulbs and, when cut, their stems release an agent toxic to other plants. Meaning that if you mix cut daffodils with tulips, for instance, all of the tulips will die horrible deaths in the night.
And H.? Those are calla lilies (which have no scent) in the pic....so you do like at least some form of lilies. I'll start running now.![]()

I've had great luck with azaleas but would love to have some great knock-out roses, but unfortunately, the deer always eat them just after they bloom.

Azaleas? In Georgia? Huh. I'd think that the temperature extremes would not be .
