Thanksgiving in my hometown. The cold snap in the air, a dash of smoke from a wood burning in a fireplace.

Pumpkin pie and fresh breads drifting out of doorways. The laughter of small children seeing relatives they haven't seen in months. Candles flickering on tables that have been pushed together to fit an extended family.

The quick THUNK of an axe splitting firewood, men in the backyard joking and laughing and drinking beer. The colors of the leaves on the trees. Green on the abundant evergreens. Browns, yellows, reds, oranges, and occasional purples on the fruit trees in the orchards.

The smells of the fruits and vegetables sitting on a front porch so pungent you can taste them. Fresh apples brought into the kitchen in a bushel basket, hand-picked. The fudge that seems to disappear that nobody admits to sneaking.

A neighbor who pauses from raking his leaves to wave hello as you pass by.

The wind at night rushing through the trees, the comforting wooooosh a lullaby at night. Waking up in the early morning, before the sun, a smattering of rain hitting the tin roof over the porch and tapping out little songs.

The one family that can't wait and puts up Christmas lights early, the little lights sparkling in the fog.

Oh, the fog.

A white blanket, covering everything and making the entire world a fuzzy blur, softening the edges. Eventually lifting, but leaving behind the dew that makes every surface sparkle with a thousand diamonds.

That's my favorite smell, and taste, and sight. Thanksgiving at home.
