fyi, just for the record? if you don't wear a mask while around others right now? you're an asshole. it's just that simple.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Having lived with an immune-compromised family member and having lost a similarly compromised friend, I personally couldn't bear living with the possibility that I might make someone ill if I'm asymptomatic. Nor would I want to leave those that depend on me behind prematurely, or make myself less capable by having a wrecked cardiovascular system by contracting and surviving the virus. I'm fortunate that I'm medically cleared to wear a mask. I feel for those who aren't. I don't understand those who flaunt or take pride in the fact that they "can't wear one".

An ounce of prevention, as they say.

I've developed a collection of cloth masks. They're pretty great.

Where would society be if we all thought like you, 'What's best for me?'

Oooh... I know! Still living in caves.

A recent study published in Health Affairs, for example, compared the COVID-19 growth rate before and after mask mandates in 15 states and the District of Columbia. It found that mask mandates led to a slowdown in daily COVID-19 growth rate, which became more apparent over time. The first five days after a mandate, the daily growth rate slowed by 0.9 percentage-points compared to the five days prior to the mandate; at three weeks, the daily growth rate had slowed by 2 percentage-points.

Another study looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries and found that those with cultural norms or government policies favoring mask-wearing had lower death rates. - UCSF: Special Notice Concerning COVID-19

You cannot dispute science. Wear the mask.

And I, too, agree with steph29, AsheleyRedux and sprite. My wife and I wear a mask whenever we go into town for whatever reason and have been since this fiasco started.

I also agree with Steph, Ashley, Sprite and Jack. Life is too short as it is, why play Russian roulette with the virus.

Things are changing around Ontario. Many city councils and health officers have made masks mandatory in their areas when you are in indoor public spaces (stores, etc.).

In Ottawa, where my son lives, that has happened, and he figures the number of people not wearing masks where he shops is down to maybe 1 in 20 or less. Toronto, Guelph, and some of other areas have done similar.

Then there's the Medical Office of Health for my health unit, who decided it's enough require them on transit or when you're "up close and personal" as in a manicure or haircut. For routine shopping, though, apparently social distancing is enough. There's buzz council is unimpressed and may impose masks through a by-law instead.

I was wearing one on and off at work (don't need to wear one at my desk since I have a private office) when I went in today, but I am still officially working from home. This was a one-off trip to meet a new employee.

Must admit that people in LA don't know how to social distance.
People need to recall that 6ft is 72inches which translates to a table for 6 people and clearly they can't visualize that.
If you are behind me and you can't extend your arm out in front of you then you are too close.
I hope that mask become mandatory everywhere around the world.

And you better continue to keep yourself safe.

From Etsy or near your area because I am still searching online for proper cloth mask just in case I want to not use the blk disposable mask.

Some are too small or not made well.

Plus, some look like the crotch area from panties.

The downside of being employed by a healthcare company (albeit in a non-healthcare role) is they make you wear boring old medical masks.

Good for you! I applaud your good sense. I’d never expose myself to any trumper anyway!

I’m required to wear a mask for work and never leave the house without one

I always try to wear a mask in public unless I know I won’t be near others (e.g. walk through the park, pumping gas, etc). However, there are times where I forget to bring one but those incidents are becoming less common for me.

Although at work I’m only one of a handful that wears one throughout the day.

I can’t think of a good tagline so this will have to do. Suggest a better one for me?

The latest official word on the effectiveness of face masks is that they provide only marginal protection, but are nevertheless worthwhile and should be worn dutifully.

The narrative has changed. A few weeks ago, a top scientific adviser stated that trying to stop COVID-19 with a mask is like trying to use a whale net to catch plankton, and that wearing them hampers the immune system, making it more likely that you'll get it from other contact sources.

Did the scientific community, in the space of just a few weeks, discover something new about the nature of a piece of cloth that nobody had noticed before?

Boris Johnson ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks in England so as not to be outdone by Nicola Sturgeon, who had just imposed the new measure in Scotland. He asked the right question of the right scientists to get the right answer at the right time, for political one-upmanship.

Ditto, the lockdown to begin with. No government wanted to be seen as the odd one out who didn't protect their citizenry, because they knew the media would savage them out of office. So they trashed the economy (again) for political safety. It's all bullshit, and you're being sold a pup.

COVID-19 is real; the reaction to it is entirely out of proportion, and is nothing but politicking and media hysteria. Yes, it's important to 'flatten the curve' and save lives. But not at such a massive expense. Around 50% of the excess deaths have been caused by the lockdown itself, due to people with other ailments not receiving medical treatment or feeling obliged not to burden the health services with other serious medical problems. As journalist Peter Hitchens, who writes for the Mail on Sunday, said, never before have we quarantined the healthy. Quarantining the sick would have been the correct course.

When the whole thing is over, Sweden will be the smoking gun. Of the handful of countries that did not lock down, Sweden has fared the worst, but are still pretty much in the middle of the overall order in terms of outcome, and have done significantly better than the UK, per capita. The virus will run its course regardless of whatever measures are imposed. These measures only delay it, the final disposition will be the same.

To get some context, the Spanish flu of 1918 killed around 50 million people. And let's not forget that the world population then was a lot lower than now. COVID-19 has caused around 700,000 globally. People will say that with this pandemic the outcome would have been worse without lockdowns, whereas in fact the UK (lockdown) and Sweden (no lockdown) have compared very similarly with one another between COVID-19 and the Spanish Flu where lockdown wasn't even a factor. Of the countries that did not lock down, the average deaths-per-capita has been one third of that of the countries that did lock down.

100 years have passed since the Spanish flu. That's a century of scientific advancement. Yet with COVID-19 they resort not to advanced science but to something so crass and primitive as locking people in their houses.

What you're experiencing is politicking fuelled by prurient media sensationalism.

But never mind. Put your maskies on. Cavort about and pull faces at one another in this new height of fetishistic fashion. Be your governments' little pet performing seals.

Wear my mask at the store and any building I enter. Have yet to experience social distancing at the grocery store.

I bought a really cool mask that makes me look like a mortal Kombat character.

But it's so hot here that it's unbearable to wear. The only place I go is the grocery store and they handle things relatively well. I'm in and out. Sanitize before and after.

I see people pull their mask down, cough into their hand and then touch everything in the store.

Masks are fine, but contact is a far more successful way for viruses to spread.

You will not get COVID from walking by someone on the street unless they sneeze into your face. You will get it by touching door handles littered with viral droplets from other people's hands.

Focus on your hands and eyes, not people walking by you on the street.

I always carry one with me. If I am in a place where it is needed I will wear it.

But as a person with a degree in microbiology, it is much more important to not sneeze or cough into your hand and touch stuff. I see people wearing a mask, but then they will pull it down and cough into their hand and then touch a door handle.

It's almost as if the mask is symbolic and they don't really understand how viruses work.

I will wear a mask in certain situations or stores simply because I am asked and I do it out of common decency.

I still think that much more time should be spent on education and basic health and cleanliness.
