In terms of living standards, security, culture, nighlife, housing, etc, which would be the best city?

My favourite city in the US is definitely New York City.

I love everything about it... the culture, the vibe, the nightlife, the arts, and the people.
I can be endlessly entertained there all day and all night...

Although its a very different kind of lifestyle, I'm also partial to coastal California areas (like Hermosa Beach or Newport).

When I lived in Austin, Texas, there was no comparison to the sexual energy there. Great place to live!

The last I heard, Minneapolis-St.Paul is the safest I think. Standard of living is different too. Usually smaller towns like Plymouth, Minnesota. Culture and night life, that's different. The bigger cities usually can get more funding for things like that. NYC, Tampa, Miami, LA, Chicago. Places like that have much more in that line.

Vancouver! Oh wait, that's in Canada...

San Francisco. But I'm kind of a west coast kind of guy. I find the east coast cities to be a bit grungy.

Care to elaborate as to why Portland is so awesome for you?

I think NYC is overrated but hey that's just me. I haven't been to that many US cities so I'll refrain from picking one ha!
Been to Vancouver once and rather enjoyed that city. From my many travels I'd also name Sydney as an awesome city. And finally also Amsterdam which is my fave city in the whole world. Once told a NYC cabbie I'm Dutch and he went off on how much he wanted to visit A-dam for the legal prostitution and soft drugs haha. Typical yanks.

As far as best city I would personally go with a small town which isn't too far from a good sized city. You get the benefits of living in a country type setting with all the luxuries of a bigger city.

I completely agree and I do!

That's one of the advantages of Austin, Tx. It's a college town with a pop somehwere over half a million, plenty of outdoor activity but only one hour drive from San Antonio, about two from Houston and three or four to reach Dallas.

The downside is August.

My vote goes for Seattle, relatively safe, lots to do, great food, good clubs, theater, if you're OK with the rain, you'll love it here!

They are and they said it's your turn to bring the apple cider for the barn dance on Saturday. Don't forget the cups.

Their our many towns in Oklahoma and Arkansaw where dog and cock fighting is not frowned upon. It is a good way to get to know the locals and there customs.

Than you may go back to you town and relax with clean air and few sounds to inflitrate your sinces. Breeth deep and relax. Big City of little rock is only a 4 hour drive by car away. PartyTown USA!

I have to agree, it is a well kept secret. I lived in Carlsbad and spent a lot of time in San Diego. Absolutely loved it. It is a city that has everything. I love LA too, but for different reasons. LA is one of the most misunderstood cities, people hate it who have never ever been there. They have no idea of how strong the creative dynamics are in the Southland.

Where I live now is in in the center of the great American Southwest. We have a growing arts community, music, painting, poetry etc., as well as a growing movie and TV production industry. The arts scene may explode. We are reaching critical mass, there are just so many artist, musicians moving in. It is like Seattle in the 80s. Santa Fe, (65,000 population and in the middle of nowhere really.) just north of us is the 4th largest art market in the US. Note I did not name my city. The fewer people who move here the better, nothing personal. The good news is the population of the whole state is only 2 million people.

I think someone like you will thrive with all the energy that LA has to offer. You want speed you will get it baby and fast hot cars!!!!!!! I heart LA I can't begin to explain the dynamics but my good memories pass through my mind a mile a minute.

Having lived in California since 1971.. I can tell you that the best way to see California is in your rearview mirror.. it is overcrowded.. under serviced.. over taxed.. unlivable with most single incomes.. and despite being the 5th largest economy IN THE WORLD!!! is still damn near bankrupt.. oh.. and don't forget earthquakes.. dropping off into the ocean.. and did I mention.. OVERCROWDED?.. commute traffic is ALL DAY.. not just morning and evening.. and lastly.. it has the highest rate of unemployment.. but hey.. we have beaches...

WOW! You are most unkind to one of the most beautiful and dynamic places in the world. Granted the government is populated by statist morons but that is a separate issue.

There is truth to what you say but I feel that even with the problems California is an incredible place and for every negative you list I could list 100 positives, maybe even 1000.

The whole world is going into the hopper, not just California.

True that, Kyle.

I lived in California the first 18 years of my life, and even though I don't know much else, I do know this: I moved to Texas late last summer, and I feel like I moved out of my comfort zone into some foreign place. The light isn't the same, the scenery isn't the same, the people damn sure aren't the same. People here act like this is the best place on earth, but just as you think California's shitty BigRod, I don't see how people are so in love with Texas- at least not this part of it, I can't speak for parts I haven't seen. The heat here is crazy though, and it gets cold in winter too. People are like: "you weren't born in TX but you got here as fast as you could, right?" I say: nope, just here to take your money. Economics, baby.

There is something about California- with all the problems and the fact that I would spend way more to live even if I made as much money doing what I do there as here, I'd move in a heartbeat if that's all there was to the decision. More things getting created, more things on the cutting edge. From all I hear and what I have seen, I prefer evil California any day. I miss it.

On all the things you said is wrong with it, that's all true I am sure, but there's a reason people put up with all that shit anyway. It's still California, baby!

Kyle and Lady.. I agree with everything both of you said.. you can dig deep and move rocks and look between the monster homes that have blocked all the best beaches.. you can stand in line for two hours at the movies and dining establishments you used to just walk in to.. or take an hour and a half just to check out at Costco.. this isn't me being bitter.. this is reality.. is there beauty here?.. of course.. stunning beauty that brings tears to your eyes for the way it used to be and could have been.. are there endless activities to keep us entertained?.. absolutely.. if you like spending $300 just to go to a ballgame.. or $750 for a night at the theater..

I guess my whole point is this.. all of the reasons you both stated exist and are valid.. but put on a scale.. in my eyes the issues I mentioned create a huge imbalance in the true quality of life in California..

Also Lady.. in what must be some sort of cosmic irony.. I was raised in Dallas.. and moved to California.. and no.. I don't want to go back there either...

Chicago is a pretty neat city
