My understanding is that there is no definitive answer to this... I watched one of these cooking programmes a while back and they have callers and one who asked your question. One chef said fridge the other said not.
edit - apparently there is a right way up too!
i keep mine in my ovaries. you people are just weird.
You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.
I keep mine in the refrigerator. I always have.
I have always kept them in the fridge. In the states they are sold that way too.

Wow! I thought they went bad outside of the fridge! Interesting. (and yes, I had to look up "larder" too!)
I guess by my statement, you know I put them in the fridge. Which way do they keep the best?

Interesting question.
I put my eggs in the fridge.
My grandparents had a chicken coop, and would put the eggs after collecting them in the basement where it was cooler, but they never (that I know of) put the eggs in the fridge.
I have a number of baking recipes where it calls for room temperature eggs to be incorporated.
I believe either way is ok to store them .... just as long as there are no cracks in the shells - I wouldn't use those for consumption.

I didn't know this until a couple of years ago but in the US, our eggs are sold in the refrigerated section but in some parts of the world, they aren't. So we have always refrigerated ours since that's how they came.
I grew up on a farm. One of my daily chores was to feed the chickens and gather the eggs. We washed the poop off the eggs and placed them in a wire egg basket, never put them in the refrigerator. That being said, the eggs bought at the supermarkets are refrigerated, so we keep them in the refrigerator at home. Now the question I have: who first saw an egg pop out of a chicken's ass and decided that was something good to eat. I don't eat eggs and rarely eat chicken...they are nasty animals.
From what I've heard, it doesn't actually matter either way unless your a baking aficionado, when I believe the eggs are best used at room temperature for making that cake rise better. Again, like most things it's a personal preference I guess.
I can't believe I'm posting on this!!
My mother has started keeping chickens, and learnt from the farmer who sold her them, that supermarkets typically store eggs for 6 weeks (refrigerated I guess), before they hit the shelves, and are still called "fresh".
I store mine at room temperature. If they are within a few days old (a week in colder weather), you can quite safely use them for carbonara sauce (mix a few raw eggs with parmesan if there are 2-3 of you, pour on to the just cooked pasta and stir through for a short while), instead of making a full-on white sauce (who needs all that flour / gluten in their body?).
I have a Japanese friend who sends me some good ingredients quite often. Bonito shavings (Katsuobushi) mixed into raw egg, with a splash of soy sauce, and then mixed into freshly cooked rice, makes for a delicious breakfast.
Bottom line, unless your climate is really hot, I'd not worry about keeping eggs in the fridge. And buy them directly from a farm if you have a local supplier.
We always keep eggs in the fridge, but I'm not sure it is absolutely necessary. As long as you don't get them wet they are impervious to bacteria, unlike duck eggs. I am old enough to remember when we stored eggs in isinglass in a bucket.
grandmother [she who must be obeyed] says pantry or larder ... I asked "even supermarket eggs?" .. now have to explain what exactly a 'supermarket egg' is..
Interesting question. I have one of those wire chickens but never got round to using it!
I have a white china chicken, and thats where I keep my eggs.I only buy them in the half dozens anyway,so they never stay in it for long.
The grocery stores keeps them in a refrigerator so I do same at home.
Does that work either side of the equator?
