Looks like it's been bracketed. I forget the term, but that's when you take three photos - the first taken short, the next dead on, and the last taken too long. Then you combine the three pics in yon computer and see what comes out. Images done this way can be really breathtaking.

That is an actual photograph of an actual eruption from an actual Chilean volcano, Dan. No photoshopping occurred nor was there any creation occurring except for the actuality which was occurring at the time the actual photograph was actually snapped. It was never actually stated whether the actual snapshot was taken at dawn or dusk during the creation of the actual plume of actual belching smoke.
