The 'Passion, Poetry Contest' has come and gone. That reminds us it's been a long, long time since Lush ran a prose contest.

As a fine, free service to Nicola and Company, do you think it's way-to-hell past time there was one (he asks, non-judgmentally) and, assuming you do, what suggestions can you give for contest subjects.

BTW, I once suggested to Nic that a good subject for a contest would be the story of my sex life. She said it was a unique idea but there was no 'Micro Fiction' category on Lush. (sigh)

Tell me about it, Rumple! I'm gagging for the next one.

Given we're coming up on 4 July for the Americans over the top of the Queen's Birthday long weekend, a.k.a. Cracker Night, in June for the Aussies, maybe a fireworks theme? Or just because I'm a big nerdalinger, what about sci-fi?

Actually, I kind of like the idea of a collaboration competition in honour of the recent badge. I think that would make for some really interesting partnerships, and of course, stories.

Whatever it is, I just hope there's no tight word limits. The short ones kill me!

My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill.

Greetings to those gearing up and/or recovering from TGIF celebrations. Also and in addition, if you'll be attending a Beltane festival, well, good luck.

Mega-congrat to all fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins for their team's 3-2 double-overtime game seven, semi-final win verses the Senators from Ottawa.
Seems like Annie, Burquette and I have the joint to ourselves. Not sure why anyone would want the place, much less your beloved barkeep, but there you have it. Would either of you rather have coffee or tea or get right down to some serious drinking?

A comp for the summer would be welcome. I'm spending all my writing time on my series about the failed wedding (see sig) and a comp would give me an excuse to break out of that milieu for a while.

July 1 is Canada Day up here (and it's our 150th b-day this year) so that would work for us Canucks, too. And s-f erotica would be fun. I've flirted with ideas for s-f stories for here but haven't really had any come to fruition yet.

I started and have abandoned a story that was supposed to be the erotic story version of the Pina Colada Song (Escape). I'd like to come back to it sometime.

I've always thought that a story that's based on a song could be a lot of fun. (Not sure of copyright issues, though).

"Fixing a Hole" could be a fun, and porny, title for an erotic story.

"Within You / Without You" has possibilities too.

I love this in principle.

The problem being whose iconic album. I was only 2 when Sgt.Pepper came out so my "iconic" album would be U2's Joshua Tree or Peter Gabriel's So or maybe Jackson's Thriller.

Someone a bit younger than me might think Nevermind or Superunknown is iconic.

And some millennials might not know Sgt. Pepper from a hole in the wall, to be brutally honest. I have one on my staff and he's remarkably ignorant of popular culture pre-1990 or so.

The idea of a contest that involves stories that are the story versions of famous songs seems very cool to me, but I imagine it's problematic. I think the particular album or song could be up to the contestant, i.e., anything from Sgt Pepper to T. Swift's "1989."

But again, I'd guess it's a can of worms, even if every story was safely within "fair use" or parody. I'm sure the site doesn't want to deal with Cease and Desist letters.

Sesame Street got sued, I believe, by Apple Corps for its song "Letter B" (i.e., Let it Be). My understanding, and I'm too lazy to look it up, is that McCartney was like, "Seriously? let them use the fucking song." But I don't remember who actually owned the rights at that point.

Letter B" is a song parody of The Beatles' song "Let It Be," sung on Sesame Street by The Beetles. Richard Hunt provided lead vocals. As the title implies, the song teaches about B words.

When the Beatles' catalogue was still owned by Northern Songs, the company attempted to sue Children's Television Workshop for $5.5 million. They cited that the song too closely resembled "Let It Be." Before the case came to trial, Michael Jackson purchased the Lennon/McCartney catalogue and the suit was dropped. The Children's Television Workshop was only fined $50, which was paid out of Christopher Cerf's own pocket. Paul McCartney, who was not involved in the lawsuit, wrote to Cerf saying that he liked the song.[

However, he says, equivocally, if there's any concern about copyrighted lyrics or lack of familiarity on the part of some callow youths, then maybe limit the contest to the title of a Beatles song, either picked by Nic are left up to contestants. Just a thought.

#1 Yeah, it's the Beatles. But I don't actually like them....(Not an overly popular topic of conversation here on Merseyside.) No doubt I've heard a song or two off the album, but the only one I know of is the title track. Is Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds on it too?
