Hi,

There is nothing on Lush that will ever cause any malware or nasties on your system. We even check advertiser's links. I hate even linking to sponsors who have popups.

A member wrote earlier and said he was seeing double underline links on Lush, and it was causing all kinds of problems - he has some kind of spyware on his pc from the looks of things.

Here are some programs recommended by Gav and others, it is a good idea to check your system regularly, whether you are having problems or not - these are all FREE (or were at the time of writing) - avoid any program with "trial" mentioned anywhere, they invariably will not remove any nasties they find unless you pay for it, and there are plenty of free ones that work well:

Many are listed here too: http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/spywareremoval.shtml

Please share with the community any others not listed here, that you recommend.

Thanks Jill.

I have a theory that 90% of these "viruses" and other nasties are written by the big AV companies themselves, in order to create demand for their own products.

Been saying that for years myself otherwise why the hell would we need antivirus programs?

Just to let everyone on LUSH know, I was the one infected with two trojan horses!! I had to run my anti-spy/malware program and anti-virus three times each to ensure everything was gone. I do want to thank the staff and all concerned for prompt responses to my initial contact. I trust this site like the rest of you and find it very clean.

I do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused!

Actually, if you people are looking for a good antivirus/antispyware I'd highly recommend Nod32 smart security. I'm using it right now, and its working great.

Nod32 for Windows XP or 7 (32 bit)

Yes. always back up your important data.

I do feel sorry for those of you who suffer from virus and malware problems. I guess thats the cost of using Windows, one of the major reasons I stopped using it.

The last thing I did to my computer was open a terminal and type in 'zypper dist-upgrade'. Lots of upgraded software and one quick reboot and I've got 26 days and 4 hours of uptime without a hiccup. If all goes well it will be 7 more months before I reboot after another upgrade. Linux has a learning curve and it certainly isn't for everyone. But my system maintenance is very minimal.

Combofix is the ultimate virus killing, registry cleaning tool. (see below)

An ex-gf acquired a particularly nasty virus on the 3rd of August, which eventually clogged up her pc with phony error messages designed to look like official Microsoft certified error messages.

It was embedded in 9 places on her pc, three places in her registry alone. Set with a timer, deep within her %personalsettings% path as well. I'd run Malware-Bytes on it thoroughly and find 4 or 5 mentions of it and think I had it knocked out...only for it to appear 44 minutes later, after a reboot of her service pack III XP.

I had ad-aware running constantly on her machine along with Avira. Somehow it snuck in and embedded itself on or about 8/3/10.

Did a google search of the popup message she was predominantly seeing:

NetworkControl the Remote Administrator Adam1 has changed some system files of Windows OS. Checking will take several minutes. Please do not turn off the computer - it can lead to system crash.

This is called RansomWare. And it is much like you think. You pay the infecting corporation $100 USD or higher, so they can sell you a download that will remove their bug off your computer. Except, it probably doesn't actually do that, either. And they have your money.

The fix I finally used after twice using Malware-Bytes/Ad-aware and Avira scans was this handy little tool.

C o m b o f i x Use it carefully. It's the 800 pound gorilla (safe for all XP/Vista/Win7 installations & infucktions)

It comes with this handy tutorial. If you're not computer savvy - find a buddy who is and let her/him run this beauty for you. It will save ya $150 an hour (2 hour minimum).

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

It's a rootkit registry cleaning wonder. It found all 9 instances of NetworkControl. And it found a 4 year old virus that was occasionally using her pc as an email spamming relay (she didn't even know it was on there!)
The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.

Thanks lustone, but those look like cracked copies of something you're meant to pay for rather than legitimate free programs. I wouldn't want to encourage illegal file or password sharing here.
