Scoring

I have seen members been knocked off the top authors list by a ridiculous score recently, and it got me to thinking if there was a way we could change the scoring system.

I understand you can chose whether or not to have only members score on your stories but was wondering if it would be feasible to have another choice of only have Friends be able to score.

And/or have a choice whether on not that you have to leave a comment if you score 4 or even 3 and under (like with the 1 score).

If we had a choice if we could do those two in our settings, I think it would put a stop to people leaving very low scores because of competition, jealousy and people who have grudges etc. I am only suggesting this because I do believe that there a lot of members who just like to share their stories and if given very low scores may not be a great encouragement to continue writing, which is a shame.

I for one would love to have these options. It might mean not as many scores but I would love to know why someone gave you a two for example.

What do you think and can this be done?
Leaving the scoring open to friends only will totally bias the results.

The setup is currently the same for everyone, and that's how it will be, a level playing field.

A lot of people will not bother voting a 2 or 3 at all if they have to give a reason. You may notice that almost nobody gives a 1. We check every story, and believe me, there should be very few 1's on the site anyway these days.

Generally it all works out a fair system. I wouldn't be overly concerned about any "Top" lists, in fact I'm considering removing it entirely.
It could be a friend that's giving the low scores. People can be petty.

The comments are the most important part anyway.

I agree!
I agree also about the comments.

I just can't believe people and so called friends can be so bitchy (not my friends though!!) Alot of people put alot of time and effort into their stories and if someone gives them a low score just to be petty well they can kiss my

Sorry, just had to vent LOL. This is a brilliant site with brilliant authors. And they should be scored based on their work and only on their work.

Maybe Nic has an idea there about taking away the top lists. Hopefully that will cut down on the competitiveness
I like to see what votes I have, but it's the comments people write that gives me the most thrill. I also like it when some Author's are better at grammar and punctuation and help me improve it. I think one Lushy member said to me, come on, you can do better than that, you know you can. That was the best advice honest and brave advice to me.
You can bet that Publishers coming on to Lush looking for writing talent, will not be too concerned about average scores and vote counts. It is the quality of the writing that matters, and talent is quite easily spotted
Scoring doesn't bother me at all. Firstly because I know that most stories have the most views because it is the highest point of interest... no arguing in that. Personally I appreciate good comments, the pm's I get are lovely and the constructive criticism ones are always welcomed.

I like the top stories and most popular lists, I use them, they are a good indication of whats good usually.
The top lists should stay in my opinion. In fact I wish they were more accurate. With true voting and ranking, the cream will rise to the top.

Sometimes I want to read a good, well written story and I don't have time to wade through a bunch that are not quite up to par. I think ranking systems help with this. Competition is healthy and encourages improvement and innovation. Its good incentive and motivation.

Not everybody deserves a gold star, so I think the rankings are a positive feature of the site.

As far as I know Primal, the voting and ranking are accurate. I think (but could be wrong) that you have to earn a certain number of fives before you do enter the top author list, which is very understandable.

As for competition, I fully agree. My point though was how easy people can sabotage your votes. I do agree with Honeybee000 on how important comments are in regards to constructive critisism.

Maybe Nic if you decide to get rid of the top author lists, replace it with 'the top 5 Authors of the (previous) Month' sort of like what it is now but you don't know who is on the list until the END of the month not during (we only would see last months winners up until the next month). Sort of like a secret vote like the Christmas competition. I hope this makes sense

But Please Nic, Please keep the story pick of the month. It is a good indication of the talent here on lush.
Hi: This is a very interesting topic to me...I came from another site where all my stories are posted. I am also one of the few guys to ever make the Hottest Author list there. Currently it is all girls. There seems to be a lot of petty jealousy among guys as far as scoring. It is also a story/chat site. I think it is no secret you get more attention from members of the opposite sex once you make the Hottest Author list. Unlike here, the list is more "permanent"...it is not based on monthly figures. Because of petty jealousy, and as far as I am concerned, there is no other reason...I have a total of ninety-seven (97), yes, count them...97 "one" votes on 53 stories...that is an average of almost two per story. I know what a "one" story looks like...one line, you are allowed that there, or even plajorized stories, which has happened on that site. I have mentioned it to the staff, but it is something that is hard to prove...someone can just say that they hate your story...who can argue?
In spite of the situation, I would not want to abolish the ratings system. Some people would. I would have to be honest and say I am a bit competitive. The "one" votes don't usually come for a few days, so I still usually get to see my stories on the Hottest Fantasy list...I don't think I would have started writing erotic stories if there was no scoring...it was one of the things that inspired me to do it in the first place...to see if I could come up with the hottest fantasy. That is me personally. I know of a former member of that site, who is also a member of Lush, who started his own site with no scoring because he got fed up. He is an excellent author. If anyone wants to know the name of the site, PM me...I will not advertise it here...It literally just started, the launch date is December 1...
I understand that ratings can be a popularity contest. I can deal with that. In spite of all the flaws of a ratings system, I personally would not want it any other way.
On a more positive note, I was informed recently I am one of the finalists for "Author Of The Year" on that "other" site, so...if I win that it would put me above the pettiness that the rating system often encourages...I think I actually have a good shot, but that remains to be seen and is something I certainly can't count on...
I know it is hard to believe that pettiness and high-school antics can occur on a sex fantasy/chat site, but believe it or not, it does...
I have learned to value the often very positive comments and feedback my stories often recieve...but, for me at least, it is still nice to see my stories on the Hottest Fantasy list...even if they get shot down a week later by some jealous idiot...
Later,
Alan.

Exakta laid out the reality of it all.

I just write for my friends and hope others like the story, so if I get more views than that, it's all a bonus.
I know it shouldn't bother me but it does. Classic example, I have been on top Authors list for say the last week mainly on top spot. Last day of the month and suddenly after 5,700 views someone decides to give me a two. Yes they might have not liked the story, but didn't leave a comment. So just because of one member, not am I only knocked off the top author list, and most popular but also my story won't appear in the story picks of november.

Coincidence, you decide, I have......

Am I being a Drama Queen? Well I did score a 30

Thank you as always chef

I've been knocked off the author of the month list from a rash of 2 scores and they always happened right after the story posted yep seemed a little fishy since right after I'll get a bunch of 5's on the same stories but in realty I don't even give a shit about scores I write my stories for me or who I've written them about if someone else enjoys them fine otherwise I could care less.

Hey Trinity...don't let the whole thing get you down, because there will always be jealous, petty people in this world and if you stop writing, they get their way...
I wrote a story, 'A Shot In The Dark', which is based on a true incident that happened on the other site. It is too particular to that site, but there was a guy there who was stealing other peoples stories and posting them. He actually copied a story written by a girl he was trying to impress on the site and when she said something, he blamed it on site error...he had her so snowed she believed him. She went around bad mouthing the management of the site and they both got kicked off. I was told by management that out of 223 scores he gave, 221 were "one" votes...he was making a huge effort to try increase his rankings and sink others...
People like that will always appear...you can't keep them off.
The fact that you are in forums and chats makes you more visible and a more likely target, I hate to say, but again, if you stop writing because of some petty sicko...they win...

Thanks Alan,

I really try not care, really I do but can't help it. All my life I have been put down and when I came to this site and started to submit my stories and got so many wonderful positive feedbacks, I felt well special for once.

Then someone comes along and scores a low score (3 low scores these last 3 days on 3 on my stories), well it just makes me feel like i'm a kid again.

I'll try to grow a back bone but can't promise anything

I'll try one more time and see how it goes then make up my mind.
If you're serious about writing, a few low scores won't put you off - and if you're just writing for fun, the scores don't matter anyway.

This is where it gets complicated. Most people who give low scores don't comment.

The reason I suggested at the top if we could have a system that you have to comment if you score say 3 or under is so we can see why people put low scores. For all I know I might have been given a two just for the subject matter. Or if something is wrong with my writing it would help if they left a comment to let me know how I can better myself.

But then I DO see nicola's view that most people would be put off from voting if they had to leave a comment.

So please readers if you don't like the story let us know why. I would rather have a negative comment then sit there and wonder why it deserved a low score with no explanation.
That's the problem with posting a story online. Some people might give a well written story a low score because it took too long to get to the action. That same person might score a poorly written story high because the subject matter excited them. There are other readers out there who couldn't give a rat's clacker whether or not we improve as writers. They're just here for their own entertainment.

You're never going to get a true indication of how good your writing is. In my opinion, it's better just to get on with honing your skills and appreciate the comments you do get. Keep writing. You'll learn not to care about those anonymous low votes, Trinity!

Thank you Lisa.

Very true!

Hey does anyone out there have a spare backbone, mine won't grow. LOL

I just have to stop being so thin skinned.

"Love all, trust a few, and do wrong to none."
Speaking of ratings and people who give you low scores...I just had someone give me a "one" on "My Best Friends Girl"...he left a comment that it was because of "wrong category"...I messaged him to ask him what category he thought it should be in and he replied "quickie, good story though"...so, in other words, he thought it was a good story, but he gave it a "one" because he thought it was in the wrong category...
He also gave a "one" on 'Clubhouse' earlier and left a message something about it being "unerotic"...
I just hope this guy does not decide to read all my stories...if you look at his profile page, I don't think he ever gave anyone higher than a "two"...
