Sorry if the suggestions aren't welcome but what about a red or grey check icon. I think what's getting to me is the blue.

i'm about to tell Gav to give you another minus 104 forum posts, Brooke ;)

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

find out what people would like to see as an icon, I'm sure there is a diamond on hand to create a graphic icon that pleases all and is more within the Lush style of branding.

an idea that pops to mind is the little red book app icon i made but it could say " READ THIS!" ot "Read Me"
here is what it looks like

Or even the check mark on the book cover? Just brainstorming here.

These are great! The blue needs to be softer and/or the box smaller if it stays that colour. As it is, it totally overpowers the EP emblem, which is not the point at all. I took a screen shot when the Rs first came out (I am that sad, I was very excited). It looked great because it was understated and not a solid block of strong colour.

I hate that tick. It just says "Blah, it'll do". I love the idea of something designed to compliment/contrast with the EP sign, like the R. It's simple and in keeping with the current rosette. The button size currently used is just too big to let the EP sign stand out. Maybe something like Crazy's idea, if people want something bold, but with Stephanie's colours?

As proud as I am of the award, it makes me want to hide it, like Kiki suggested. Sorry, that's how I feel, whether you're bovverred or not. I can't believe I felt so strongly about it! That's me done.

actually the book icon could have any award written on it really Like EP, or RR, comp entry, or whatever but it does have the lush colours and keeps continuity.
here another idea and at current check mark size (40x40 px)

Maybe it is done because of the resemblance of the editor's pick but I really think the black medal suits the style of the site better and is more appealing!

I like the black medal far better myself...much classier...not a fan of the new check mark at all...

Yeah, bringing back the black medal would be great...unless, of course, Lush started using something like a martini glass...now that would certainly work...

I like the red book a lot but the White lettering/ font color, I think, is better than the yellow.

This gets my vote!
I agree with Shylass, the current one kind of makes me want to hide it, however, it is MUCH nicer in the red like CD has done.

I really think the blue is very jarring...m

Would the wee book icon work with a yellow ep rosette on or over it? Or how about a laurel over it or something?

Ding Ding Ding Ding!!

Love those books, and coloursetting yellow or white!! Anything can go on top and haha Maz I thought of a medal on top as well! Great replacement for the classy black medal;-)!

Btw like the martini glass too, but then I like one anytime

Laurel vectors and pics

It's the green leafy bit on that pic... It's a standard thing for winners... Rally drivers get one placed around their neck when they win
The designs suggested look nice and all but personally, I like the new symbol better than the last one, it was a little dreary and the new one fits nicely next to the audio symbol while still being unique.

I'm quite proud to have one on my page, it means that someone liked my story enough to say "I like this enough to want to share it with more people." To me, that's more important than what my page looks like (although, I'm quite satisfied with how it looks).
I think that people have lost what should be the focus here. That should be on being pleased that writers will now be getting recognition in a new way rather than complaining about the colour and shape of the symbol.

This is not a cooperative where every member has a say in every decision made. It is Nicola's site and the decision is ultimately hers. It seems to me that it is really ungracious to carp about this. All of the suggestions are acceptable.
It is a lovely honour to have, I agree...

It would be good if there was a way for the regular Lushies to nominate or vote for a story to become a recommended read too...

Like a readers choice award or something?
I hate the check mark. I would much prefer a thumbs-up or as I said on Stories Space, where I'm a moderator:

I'd go for something simple, like a blue star:

To me, the check mark evokes a ballot, which would imply that a vote has been taken — but recommendations are made by individual moderators without being put to a vote.

A star feels more like when we were kids and the teacher would sometimes bestow a star on the paper of someone who'd done an assignment particularly well. It just seems a more fitting symbol to me.

C'mon, are you trying to tell us you really can't come up with a simple star that doesn't look militaristic? That's just silly.

Edit: I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said I "hate" the check mark. I don't like it in its current use as an icon for the Recommended works for the reason outlined above, but I have nothing against check marks in general, nor do I intend any disparagement against the designer.

sometimes i'm sorry i share things - i try very hard to keep the doors open, make things transparent, to share what goes on, to make sure that people feel a part of the site - and they should, it belongs to everyone. that all said, someone put a lot of their own time into designing icons to be used, guided by suggestions coming from Nicola and the staff and we spent a lot of time trying to come up with a way to recognize writers beyond the EP. this was, from start to finish, a discussion that was conceived of months ago.

what i hear is people concentrating on how much they hate the symbol. sorry. i'm damn proud of the check mark next to my stories and i'm damn proud of the person who designed it. if you want to turn this thread into ridicule, well, that's on you. too often here, people can just be thoughtless. i do it from time to time, too, but really, there are better ways to go about things then put them down. i thought i was giving Liz some well deserved credit, but instead, i kind of put a target on her back, at least that's how i feel. thanks, guys. next time i'll keep my mouth shut.

If I am not mistaken Nicola herself suggested she liked another symbol, and it was never my intention and judging by the input and alternative suggestion of the other posters here not of them either, to be ungracious. From what I have seen people have tried to come with alternatives in line with the site's style. You can also cherish that initiative but who am I...Ofcourse it is up to Nicola or you guys (the mods team) to make the final call.

If it stays as it is no problem either, then I stick to my original suggestion.J36IEX17Gz5FnS6c
Sorry on iPhone double post!
I'd just like to remind people that Lush isn't run by robots. I know Gav can give off that vibe, but it's run by humans. Someone had to put the time and effort in to make the symbol and then a bunch of other things which I don't quite understand involving coding and what not had to happen. All the tearing it to pieces and people hating on it is kind of a slap in the face to them saying, "I don't appreciate your work or the time you put in even though you've worked hard to see that mine is recognized."

Any chance of you making up something similar with a blue background?

I wouldn't put it down to complaining, graphic communication is the same as writing, it comunicates far more than just what you see on the page.
It should be special and in keeping with the branding of the site, not just any ol', copy and paste symbol that represents nothing?
Branding, corporate identity and icons that are special to the writers and memorable for the brand (such as lush).
We know clear well it's not a cooperative, but the talents that exist here as a group of members is a gold mine for the site itself, and the promotion of it's writers. It would be silly and ignorant to exclude that type of input.

I'm not trying to be ungrateful, and I don't think any other people in this thread are either. One of the many things I love about this site is that the creators listen to us and, if I'm not mistaken, even welcome suggestions and open dialogue about site improvements and the like. I think that is all anyone here is trying to do. But I'll stop posting if its coming across any other way.
