Hi. I just learned that Tumblr is removing all NFSW content on Dec 17th and I am seeing lots of folks freak out on Twitter and elsewhere.

https://tumblr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/231885248-Adult-content

I think they are going to regret this decision as I bet a good % of their traffic comes from the thousands upon thousands of NFSW related tumblr sites.

Was thinking maybe this could be an opportunity for Lush Stories. You already have a well known and regarded brand - plus have the web infrastructure and many of your Forum threads are pic posting related. Maybe you could set-up tumblr-like capabilities for the current tumblr content providers (which also includes pretty much every stakeholder in the porn industry from the porn stars to the film makers).

Might be something lucrative to consider.

Cheers

Wow, that's quite some move from Tumblr. I know there's been a lot of scandal involving their site of late.

It looks like our page there will be given the chop / filtered: https://lushstories.tumblr.com/

I wonder if the likes of Twitter will take a similar stance soon enough? Instagram already disallow anything NSFW.

We will naturally get some extra traffic I'm sure. I don't know what we can do directly to encourage people to join here from there though?

Our traffic / membership is primarily related to our story content, and people wanting to join an adult social network to meet other people online and off.

Tumblr is more an image sharing platform, which is a somewhat different proposition. We have that capability already with the forums and people's profiles, so there is some crossover.

Thanks for posting TCredo!

I wouldn't be shocked if Twitter starts restricting things as well. All the social media sites are in the crosshairs from regulatory agencies, and adult content is a soft target to attack for the purpose of getting the public on the side of regulation.

I've already seen the evidence of panic mode coming from camgirls, who all but depend on those platforms to direct fans as they move from site to site.

What is "adult content?"

Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.

Hi Nicola. Thanks for your thoughts - and I should say upfront, thank you for running such a wonderful web site and community. Lush is truly a unique place and provides so much for so many. Congratulations for all of that.

It is pretty risky move by Tumblr. Seeing lots of articles talking about it including this one where the CEO says "In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves."

https://

It also mentions something I wasn't aware of because I'm not an Apple customer - but I guess Apple took the tumblr app out of the app store. But I think it's an overreaction. I mean the problem was child porn being posted which is abhorrent and criminal but does that mean you ban all nsfw?

NSFW isn't the problem - fix the problem - child porn. Verizon (current owner of Tumblr) is probably trying to go overboard to get back in good graces with Apple but... whatever...

I appreciate what you said about Lush is different but I was thinking there might be a way to add an extension to Lush which would be tumblr-like for nsfw stuff. I'm ignorant to how you operate the "live cams", "tube" or "store" but it could be something like that for folks to post images like they do on tumblr now. I think to be attractive to tumblr content providers, you would need to have something tumblr-like - not just the forum set-up but something like tumblr pages/sites.

I don't post there but from what I know it is pretty easy to post - and certainly easy to access and share.

I also appreciate how hard it is for a site/app like tumblr to monetize their traffic - but I do know in 2 weeks there is going to be a massive void impacting thousands of content providers. It will be interesting to see what happens.

One suggestion. I wonder if there are direct marketing firms who provide e-mail marketing to tumblr content providers - and if the cost is reasonable, maybe you could get an email marketing campaign running quickly to let the tumblr folks know Lush is here and open for their nsfw content. Again, though, I think for it to work you would need to have something different on Lush for them to post content like they do now.

I'm also ignorant on what additional costs you'd face with hosting all the content - as well as probably a dozen other business aspects that would need to be assessed for cost, compliance, security, etc...

Sorry this got long. Very interesting topic. Thanks again.

That is the funniest part about this insane decision.

What would actually be funny as a protest would be if all current male users of Tumblr set-up tumblr pages with nothing but pictures of their own nipples or other shirtless guys. Just overload tumblr with a flood of hundreds of thousands of nipple pics.

Such a ridiculous policy deserves a ridiculous response smile

I'm friends with a few popular cam girls and this is causing panic.

And totally agree with you that adult content is an easy target. I know it's not fool proof but if you age verify folks and market content appropriately then we can all just be adults and look or don't.

Tumblr let child porn hit their platform - they need to fix that problem and aggressively prosecute the criminals. But to overreact like this... is such a joke that I predict by April Fools day, Tumbler is NWFE (the E is existence).

Reading all the news on this today, I was actually thinking about Disney of all brands. Years ago (early 80's) they wanted to make non-G rated movies but were, rightfully, afraid of impacting their brand - so they created Touchstone Pictures for more mature-content movies. Believe it was a major success and let Disney keep things in tact with their branding. Why couldn't Tumblr do something similar? They have the platform - just duplicate it - keep "tumblr" non-nsfw and come up with a site/app called something else; branded differently, etc.

Pretty sure advertisers turned the screws on tumblr. When most of your traffic is porn... are you not a porn site? That's what advertisers were asking themselves and they forced tumblr to clear things up for them.

Yeah, but Disney is Disney. They can afford to toss billions at something that might work.

R-rated ( Touchstone ) and X-rated are light years apart as well.

The moment something goes 100% adult, it becomes infinitely more difficult to manage. First off, an app can't be made available in either of the official app stores, meaning it's going to have extremely limited usage by the general populace.

Generating revenue via ads and such becomes a living hell, fraught with the peril of bad actors infiltrating the ad networks with malware.

The list of speed bumps goes on and on. It's just not viable to create a 100% adult alternative.

Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr.

It is interesting that they are not banning erotica. There premise must be that most people don't read and therefore no one will complain.

My bookshelf includes 227 stories, which include 76 collaborations;

One Editor's Pick, Three Series Awards, Fifty-three Recommended Reads, and Eight Famous Stories are included. Go to https://www.lushstories.com/profiles/view/ChrisM/stories

There's been some interesting suggestions and posts on this.

One thing we could quite easily incorporate, would be an image wall (in addition to the current image gallery profile section). I agree, the forums aren't the right place for hundreds of thousands of images to be posted.

Would there be much of a demand for it here though I wonder? The fact we've had close to 400,000 images posted, on what is fundamentally a story site, shows that there is.

I'll let this percolate for a while and see what Gav says concerning the technicalities.

I've been running two tumblr blogs for years - at least as long as I have been here on Lush. One of them is a gallery site with pics that I have found on the Internet that I like. And yes 99% of them are NSFW pics that children probably shouldn't see. But my site is marked NSFW and 18+ My other site is my story site and there I have all the stories I have written - nearly 700 of them now. Many are crossovers that I have posted here but some won't make it to Lush because one of the nice things about tumblr is I could let my inner beast run free and write things Lush would toss out immediately (still keeping within tumblr's TOS - no child porn, scat, or death amongst others)

In addition, the pictures I used as covers for my stories could also be hotter and more explicit than Lush allows - showing genitals and penetration. But now not only will my gallery site disappear completely but so will almost all if not all the cover pics - should I decide to keep the "erotica" the text there.

tumblr's new plan will take away everything that made it special for me and rip the heart out of my story blog. It will be like reading a newspaper - the cover pics are what made the story more than just words on a screen. I haven't decided whether I will keep my story site yet. I did a hell of a lot of work to get it all up but without the cover pics I don't see how much interest anyone will have in it. I know I won't have much interest in putting up anything new. I can only hope that such an uproar occurs over this that the Powers That Be realize it is not in their best interests to go through with this madness.

I totally get what you are saying MJ.

The thing is though, the decision has been made and I am 99.99% sure it will be final.

Apple decided to turf the Tumblr APP out of their store, and with it, a huge chunk of their revenue.

A large percentage of their advertisers are now aware that there are sections of that site, which are harbouring not only NSFW, but illegal content. That's a huge no-no for them (as it should be).

So Tumblr basically have no choice in the matter, or they will likely go under.

A lot of Tumblr blog owners are looking at having a lot of their work accumulated over many years go up in smoke. MJ has already discussed some of the issues they face. Here's another blog owner's take and some of his/her suggestions.

http://shadow-spires.tumblr.com/post/180766905879/save-the-blogs

I know lots of people are talking about migrating, but none of us are sure to where yet. Pillowfort seems to be an option, some people are talking about Twitter. But for now, it’s a mess, and even if we knew where we were going, it’s often a huge process, and a lot of us have stuff on tumblr that ONLY exists there.

One possible quick solution to save your blogs, both NSFW and personal, is to import it to WordPress. I found this solution through from frantic googling on how to save an entire blog, text posts an all. There are several apps for downloading all the pictures from a tumblr, (Plently for Windows, but only a few paid ones for mac, of which Tumbelog Picture Downloader is working for me so far) but this is the only solution I’ve seen so far that allows you to save EVERYTHING. I downloaded my NSFW blog in like 10 min. My regular blog, which is significantly larger, is in the process of importing, but I don’t anticipate any problems. I will, of course, update you if I have any.

They're being forced to move once but may be reluctant to move again at a later date.

Bottom line is that the opportunity to bring them to Lush likely has a "best if sold by" date.

It's a loss. There were so many deliciously hot Tumblr sites here on Lush. I used to have one myself. I imagine trying to replicate Tumblr here on Lush would be frighteningly difficult in terms of coding and server space. And almost no one owns the rights to the pix posted. Bummer. I enjoy the occasional trip down the rabbit hole into someone's Tumblr stash of images.

EDIT: Great article in Slate on this: https://slate.com/technology/2018/12/tumblr-porn-should-be-welcomed-not-banned.html

"What banning “adult content” will do, however, is eradicate one of the few mainstream, safe, and non- places where people could participate in communities that openly congregate around sex and sexuality. Sex is great, and it’s no wonder that people like to consume sexual images—much of the internet is dedicated to this. Knowing that one could roll onto Tumblr, a very popular social media site, find a blog dedicated to whatever flavor of porn one likes, and look at images that turn one on, made the whole ordeal of seeking sexual imagery less daunting, demeaning, and dangerous."

I would love to see a tumblr like page page for lush users here on lush. One that members that have tumblr accounts can import their pics. before they close it down

Excellent idea.

And if Gav could scrape said pages / content automatically and post them up here on a new profile wall feature, all the better.

I'm not sure it will be possible given our limited resources, but I've put it to the coding power to be.

EU-citizens might wanna try the GDPR route…

Quote by Wikipedia article on "General Data Protection Regulation"
Data subjects have the right to request a portable copy of the data collected by a processor in a common format, and the right to have their data erased under certain circumstances.

If Tumblr offers such a portable copy then I'm sure there will be tools to import that content in WordPress for instance, or something like that.

And if Lush is serious about trying to move content over from Tumblr, then having it stored in a common format would take the pressure off of Gav. I'd be truly impressed if he could pull off an import, or even just an indexing, of all content on all Tumblr-accounts linked from Lushies' profiles. Unless there are tools up for grabs that can already do that.

This is part of why I keep my Lush stuff on Lush. Mainstream social networks are getting tougher and tougher on adult content so I'd rather not deal with problems from posting my Lush content, even links to it, elsewhere. Even the board where I admin has a fairly strict "no NSFW" policy that I wrote (yes, I did) and that I observe religiously. I've linked some of my SS content there but never any Lush content. I don't even talk about this place other than vague allusions to "on another site."

That said, I also had the thought that there must be some way this can be turned into an opportunity for Lush and I'm glad to see I was not alone in that.

I am seeing this article promoted by many tumblr sites I follow - talks about an app that can automatically download all images from a tumblr site. See many folks comment on how well it works. Might be an easy way to do large downloads then somehow upload to a new wall feature.

Hi Everyone,
Last night I downloaded the program that TCredo speaks of in the post above me and it worked amazingly well. It took only about a minute to download the program and about 20 minutes to rip the pictures off my tumblr site. For those of you who haven't visited my site, I had around 4650 pics on my Gallery site and it captured all but 20 of them! It even went back 3 times to try to get the ones it missed the first time!

While this TumblrRipper program might be a one time use thing it will sure save a lot of work getting your pics off tumblr before the ax falls on the 17th. Thanks, TCredo for the link - you saved me countless hours of work my friend! smile

Of course it is. I'm glad I decided not to do a Tumblr site, although I suppose I could set up a Windows (ach spit) VM.

From another thread, I hope that's a Jag, maybe an XK150, or something else respectable, that you are lavishing all that attention on.

Looks like we're in for a nasty spell of wether.

I very much doubt it. Looks like a rushed and poorly put together site from a chancer out of London. I know they say it's about to be relaunched, but not even the footer links work, and the deadline has already passed.

We decided to stay away from the whole project in the end for legal reasons. There's a very good reason Tumblr pulled that content in the first place.
