Great news for everyone, even if it drastically reduces everyone else's chances of getting some prize money.

Super excited to read your entry. Sure it will be a knock-out.

don't be so sure. i've been drinking a lot lately.

This is my first time entering a competition.

The contest rules tickled my fancy: (paraphrasing here) incorporate theme(s) and color(s) into a story.

“Great!” I thought and starting typing up a frenzy.

As I wrote in MS Word, I had these other characters I totally thought I could add and explain. Then I remembered the last contest rule.

3,500 word limit

!&*#+!$^-?

* Uh-oh *

The word count increased , I got increasingly nervous, and then I conceeded that I had to ditch the other characters since they weren’t central to the story.

Oddly enough, that actually helped me focus on what was essential and what wasn't.

Completely unintentionally, I guess I have to thank the “Rainbows” Story Competition creators for being secondary editors.

I’m somewhat unreasonably proud of this story, even if it doesn’t win any awards. I hope others like it, but I’m going to like it regardless.

I want to encourage anyone who’s never entered a competition here or anywhere else to give it a shot.

You might surprise yourself.

lol word count is always a bitch - i'm at about 2000 for the one i'm writing and realizing i have a LOT more to somehow cover in 1500 words... *sigh* looking forward to reading yours, soon as i'm done with mine. ok, maybe i should do it before, i have a bad habit of waiting until the 11th hour...

Exactly this, Sprite.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I really wanted to add those other characters and just ran out of space.

If it’s not you doing it, please inform the other moderators to take their time with my story, seeing as how there's much more than a week for the deadline (July 10, 2020). {I'm writing this reply Sunday, June 28, 2020, 9:50 p.m. EST.}

I'm sure you all [a] are going to be inundated with stories at 11:59 p.m. that Friday and have the added responsibility of writing your own stories, getting those moderated, and publishing them before the deadline, too.

I don't know how the moderators do it all.

Yeah, mine came in at about 3800 at first. I was really reluctant to cut any particular part of the story, so it forced me to really think about the way I phrase things and to be more succinct. I liked the outcome.

Pride in something you spent time and energy creating should never be "unreasonable". If we don't enjoy our own writing, what's even the point?

I will read your piece when I get a chance. smile

I'm kinda disappointed how few of the entries are in the Gay Male category so far. The competition is very dominated by Lesbian stories.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of those stories are phenomenal—some of the best I've read—but I had hoped for a bit more of a spread and, in particular, to see some more great quality Gay Male pieces as we don't tend to see as many RR- or EP-quality stories in there.

If anyone is thinking of slipping in a late entry, consider going Gay, just for this comp. ;)

"slipping in a late entry" *Grins* sorry, C-man, but i'm going T with this one.

Well, drat. Here I have my story half finished about a transgender woman and her male lover. Well, I hope it will still be interesting even if not a winner.

I'll second that - this is only the second competition I've entered and if nothing else it works really well as an exercise to improve your writing. My first draft was over 5000 words... Just don't read the other entries until you submit yours, I'm glad I didn't or I wouldn't have been motivated to write.

Mine could have gone in either the Trans or Gay Male category... so I put it in the Outdoors one instead. I figured the tags point out the other aspects for those who have some preference for or objection to them.

Punked competition entry: Punk’s Undead

A very naughty Catholic schoolgirl: Emma (Part 1) (RR) | (Part 2)

Horror: Women Of Dark Desires(RR), Doll Parts (EP), Lo! Baphomet! A Queer Erotic Horror (OS)

A cheeky little micro: Go Fuck Yourself!

QFFT

Gotta agree with you on that. Had I read any of the entries before I submitted mine, I would have given up before I'd even started. Some writers here are hella good.

Let that be a lesson to you newbies (or wannabe newbies): write first, edit, submit, then look at other writers' work. Don't psych yourselves out.

I couldn't even begin, after last year. My entry for last year's Pride Comp, a trans story, turned into a 2-part, 16,000 word story - not atypical, just totally outside of comp requirements. This year I'm facing reality and sitting it out. Good luck, though!

I noticed this in my quest for the Prolific Writer badge. My Gay Male story got far less comments, votes, reads than my stories in other categories. And I noticed same for other stories in that category. That is exactly why I chose to write my comp piece there. I would like to bring more reads, and thus understanding, to this category as well. I did have straight male readers tell me they wouldn't read my story. And my reads are lowest yet compared to my other comp entries. But, I, like the other authors stated about their own entries, am still happy with my entry. smile The comps make us all better writers!

You probably need time to recover from the blood vessels you popped straining to write your microfiction in 100 words.

Everyone should feel pride in a published competition entry. If it doesn't have merit, it won't get published. And *not* winning doesn't diminish the quality of your submission. I wish more newbies would enter and see it is the best way to attract new readers and give other authors a chance to view your writing. I loved your entry!

I make it a practice to always nudge my writing friends into entering the contests. To at least try. It is such a fulfilling thing to do. I look forward to the challenge every other month or so. But, absolutely, don't read the other entries until you get your own written. That's the best practice, I agree.

I didn't actually know there was a 'Prolific Writer' badge. I'm nowhere near anyway. I don't even think I've written as many stories as there are categories.

Thanks for writing in the Gay Male category, even when you had readers say they wouldn't read. I once entered a comp (not specifically LGBT-themed) with a Gay Male piece, and I didn't even get the 10 votes necessary to be considered. It sucked, because I worked really hard on it and thought it was really good (it was later awarded an RR, so it must have been decent).

That's why I want to see more awesome stories in the category—so that more people are inclined to go looking there for their next hot read.

Keep fighting the good fight, lol.

Those have since healed, but I pulled a groin muscle trying to drag the huge stack of extra words out to the trash bin and I'm still walking with a limp. And don't you dare say 'A limp what?'

Kimmi:

I really liked your entry, too, especially the vision of a future world where discrimination isn't even a living memory.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I've privately messaged you.

My story specifically in the Gay Male category has 9,900 views. Not bad at all. My story for the Pride contest last year has just 2,200 views right now but I'm still happy with it. It was mainly written from a Gay history viewpoint. I have not lacked gay characters in stories but they were not meant for the Gay Male category. I suppose the male character in my Rainbows competition entry may be either gay or bi. He is in a loving relationship with a transitioning woman who still retains her male genitalia.
Y’all, go check out fuzzyblue’s entry in the “Rainbows” Story Competition.

Sometimes I Wonder If My Behaviour Is Considered Normal

Words do not even begin to describe it. People are knocking it out of the park in this contest.
