Go into it for that. If you get in Top Ten, "Woohoo!" ... if not, you can be sure you got more reads, votes, comments than if you submitted your story outside comp.

Sometimes it helps to have a competition to write for - you have a theme or template to follow instead of trying to write something from scratch.

Adding my two cents to the discussion. First time submitting a story for a competition and happy that I did. As some remarked, it pushes you to try new things. I honestly didn't think I could write a comedy, yet here I am. Everyone loves to win, but there could be only three in the top three. It's life, what can you do. I tried to get into this competition to have fun and I did, I call this success.

Looking on the other side, having competition from amazing and brilliant authors is intimidating. I hope it doesn't stop anyone from submitting their stories, but it can be very demoralizing when you start and you are a competitive person. Looking at other competitions (in other fields) I did in the past, introducing the concept of competing against people in the same "weight category" could reduce this problem. There could be a deciding factor like the number of times you have won a competition to know in which category to put you. For example, four times winners and more are in the expert group, one to three times winners are in the intermediary group, and those who never won in the beginner's group. The jury process wouldn't have to change too much, you select the top four-five of each category and select the winner for each. So, instead of 1-2-3, you would award best expert, best intermediary, and best beginner prizes. Not sure if it was ever suggested but I think it could be a great way to manage this issue.

Good thing I read that, because I have been already contemplating a sister story to Mr. Cox. In all fairness, there must be a story around a runaway pussy (not the cat, of course) but I am not sure it could be made funny. Anyway, will sit and wait until after May 7th.

I didn't realize that I was at all competitive until I started publishing online over three years ago (on three sites at the moment). But I don't feel intimidated by other authors. At the very beginning (it wasn't on Lush), I was just glad that I wasn't laughed off the page. So if other authors are good, and they deserve to win, I'm comfortable with that. I'm not going to nit-pick the process of choosing winners.

Lol.. the words ‘fool’ and ‘foolish’ will be appearing zero times in this story. Fuckery on the other hand... there is some fuckery... at least the fucking part. As usual, I’m not to be taken too seriously. Sort of happy the plastic porn happened before the comp was announced because it’s made me take a completely different approach to the theme than I would have otherwise - albeit a loose approach.

I did something totally idiotic in my younger years (18) and moved 100 miles just so I could fuck someone based off a picture. It was literally an overnight decision ? I was reckless at that age...

Forty-five - what is the usual number for these competitions? Yeah, there are a lot of last-minute entries, but it does say May 6, so give them the time. Nobody said you have to read them all - I don't even try! And you can still publish your other stories unless you think this is too big of a distraction - too many readers for the competition only?

Too clarify, Mr LSL, I can't publish my stories because they either reference my competition submission or are based on a character within that submission, and if you read further up the thread you will see that you are not allowed to publish stories referencing or based on your competition entry for the duration of the competition.

Of course, I didn't have to read them all. I made an active choice to do so, and as Luca says above, hats off to the judges who do this because without them there would be no competition. Judging by the comments on the stories I am not alone in having read every single entry, so a virtual pat on the back to anyone else who has done it. If there are further entries I will also read those because that is the commitment I made to myself.

As authors and as competition entrants we all want to be read. Sometimes the reading was joyous and sometimes less so, but if you look at the number of views on your story, one of those would have been me.

Personally, I read so few stories normally that I made a vow to myself that I would read every entry this time. I sampled a fair few of the entries in the horror comp — then never managed to finish my own story.

I'm sort of making amends for being such a selfish bastard with my time, trying to read at least three a day. I should get them finished by the time the results are announced. I'm glad I've chosen to read all the entries as I would have missed some excellent writing if I had merely picked what appealed to my own taste.

This one is quite a challenge, I think. How to get the foolishness into the story, without spoiling the eroticism or the story structure. But the challenge is one of the reasons for entering, plus the fact that competition entries tend to get more reads.

You're cutting it pretty close here. It sounds like you have more to do than just the final polish. But some people work better under pressure.
