One of them has written a spambot which creates accounts and uses the maximum allowed 10 messages a day (for new accounts), to spam message members. 60 accounts we nuked yesterday.
We are putting in measures to try and curtail these activities. It will impact the user experience (limiting messages further, only okaying accounts set up with known "good" service providers etc..), but I'd rather have that than the place covered in bad ham.
It's a minor irritation which is becoming a major one.

I appreciate the quick replies from the mods, but I wonder if we could prevent these by allowing authors to approve/report comments from new free members who are in the first week of membership. Maybe turn this off after they get 5-10 such posts approved by authors instead of a specific time.

I am a computer programmer and all my clients have had to invest time, money, and resources to battling hackers, protecting customer privacy, etc. I have to continually train in security to protect my computer and client data from all the new types of attacks. It is such a shame a few continue to try to ruin great things for the rest of us. I am sure you all would rather devote your time and energy to a million other things. Your quick response time and diligence to protect us is amazing. I really appreciate your efforts! And the efforts of your assassin kitties!
