I think it is related to a new ad network we are trialling, who are injecting a script into the chat room setup. It seems there's an unexpected conflict.

Gav has been made aware. I expect it to be back working properly, within the next 12 hours.

Apologies.

So much for privacy

BTW, the script that's currently inserted by trw12.com checks for a lot of keywords that refer to some seriously troubling subjects, and ones that are definitely not allowed on Lush. Here's the complete list, with some of them highlighted:

Apart from the privacy issue of letting a third party inject scripts into the page, is this the kind of ad network that Lush wants to do business with?

It has nothing to do with privacy.

Their ad code has to load, as does the site code. There must be a conflict of sorts. Gav is looking into it.

Running 3rd party code in one's site is definitely a privacy matter. I can see cookies being set for a domain other than lushstories.com. This makes it possible for them to track me over different sites that use the same ad network. Also, my locale is being passed to that domain. I imagine that most users prefer not to be tracked or have any details about them being sent to some shady (the keywords are pretty revealing) ad network.

It's potentially also a security issue (it's what cross-site scripting attacks are based on), but abusing that would quickly ruin their business model.

I think this is one for Gav to answer.

All ad networks use cookies. If you visit any commercial site with ads, you will have cookies served up.

I'd prefer you discuss things like this with Gav directly, and in private, rather than unduly cause concern to our members.

aliens just abducted my wife - thank god i had my tinfoil hat on at the time or i'd be gone too!

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Is this your way of saying you don't mind doing business with an ad network that matches banners to keywords like chloroform, rapeable, murder or peadophilia? Or do you not believe me when I say that including 3rd party scripts is a security/privacy issue?
I surely hope it's the latter.

The fact that other sites do it doesn't mean it's not a privacy issue. It's even the other way around: the fact that other sites use the same ad networks is exactly what makes it possible for these networks to track people.
But to be honest, I find the fact that this particular network tries to make money by matching their banners on the keywords I highlighted in my previous post much more concerning than those cookies. Think about it: Lush includes a script with these keywords, not to block them, but to make a buck. That doesn't feel right to me and I kinda hope it doesn't feel right to you too.
If you which to discuss this further in private, that's fine by me. But as this is not so much a technical issue I don't see a reason to take this up with Gav.

it's my way of saying i trust Nicola implicitly and that i think your paranoia is getting out of control.

It wasn't me who was wearing the tinfoil hat ;)

Curious what paranoia you're referring to. About the privacy or the keywords?

I have asked our ad agency if we can supply a blacklist of words to be excluded from their scripts. I suggest these are a generic set of phrases they use for all adult publisher sites.

These ad agency (not advertiser) scripts are sandboxed inside their own document. The same origin policy enforced by your browser limits access to other documents not originating from the same domain (www.lushstories.com). So unless you're running some older versions of IE (if so, there are more pressing concerns to deal with) then your lush session is secure.

Like most ad agencies they will use tracking cookies to display relevant ads when they appear on other partner sites. Something Google and AdWords has perfected.

The words themselves are not the problem. The list of keywords is just a symptom of the fact that Grand Slam Media (if I'm correct) sees no problem in selling ads matching those terms. There are at least two threads in the Think Tank about culture, how it needs to change and how we need to speak up against it. Targeting ads for adult websites to match words like chloroform, and unwillingly is, in my mind, a manifestation of culture. And even though those terms will not have matches for this site I hope that Lush will rethink whether they want to do business with a company that sells them to other sites.

As for the sandboxing: that applies to the scripts that run inside the iframe that's being inserted to make their tracking cookie work. It does not apply to the script that's inserted in the main page itself. That one runs in the same global scope as the Lush scripts, has access to the full DOM and could even still establish communications with the scripts inside the iframe, essentially opening up the sandbox. It doesn't, but there are no browser restrictions that prevent it from ever doing so.

I just wanted to put it out there that in regards to chat rooms, the number of people listed is not matching with the "Who's Online" list.
And yes, I have made sure that it is not effected by any people possibly on my block list.

Example:
A Pic Room says there are 22 people in it. the "Who's Online" only has 18 names listed. I go in the room, and I count 22 people. not including myself. With no one on my block list.

Just a tad annoying. Nothing big.

Thanks!

I noticed that early today. and I also realized that the members you do not see in the rooms are those of us that log in invisible... nothing to do with those that blocked you or vice-versa....

I hope it is not something permanent... as there are some individuals that i rather keep away from ...

This was implemented as a new feature/improvement a couple of days ago:

I see they're indeed gone. And though I'd still rather see Lush doing business with another ad network I'm actually glad Lush did request these words to be removed. At least it's a signal to Grand Slam Media, from one of its customers, that it's not OK. So thanks for that.
