I may have discovered this late, but for those not yet in the know, there are free sites on the web, through which you can recover deleted pictures, either uploaded or downloaded, from memory cards, hard drives etc. Even pictures you deleted long ago can be recovered for free. So think on when selling cameras or mobile/cell phones or allowing others to use your technology particularly any containing the kind of private pictures we see here on lush.

I'd be interested to learn more from anyone who has used any of these image recovery sites. Are deleted images really ever deleted?
Anything on any computer is never truly deleted, even if you destroy the device (HDD, SSD, SD Card etc), there's still a chance, however remote that the file still exists. The fact is, once something's on a computer, it's always there, and the same thing goes for it being on the internet. Low level format tools claim to be able to completely erase memory, but I've not yet put this to the test.
When you delete files on your computer they are not actually erased. Your operating system simply marks that sector of your hard drive as free space which can be written over with other data later on.

There are several applications which can be used to scan this 'free space' and retrieve whatever is still stored there. Some are free to download and work remarkably well. Due to the obvious privacy issues with using 'free online services' to do this, I would highly recommend downloading an app instead of trusting a 3rd party.

This one is quite popular:

This app also has a feature that can securely wipe your drive's free space in order to make deleted files unrecoverable. An especially good idea if you are ever selling a computer or laptop without first formatting it.

This is the reason why, when I get rid of a computer, I take it apart and take the hard drive and memory sticks and smash them to smithereens! No one can get anything from my hard drives once me and my trusty sledgehammer are done with them! As for cameras, I've never gotten rid of a digital so that's not a worry.

There's a shredding place here that will destroy your hard drive for you, but I trust my sledge more than any company!
