I recommend Depression Comix: http://depressioncomix.tumblr.com/ The author struggled with depression, and they're really good just as a way to explain how it feels to someone who's never had it. I absolutely love the author, too: he used to do Sexy Losers.

One thing I think is that everyone needs a diversion. Something you enjoy. We don't have to stew in our minds...Also living in the moment, not the past, not the future but where you are now. We create stress by thinking we should be different people or reliving mistakes. Sounds new agey but stressing about the past is fruitless. Nothing can be done about it.

One can walk every day and not clear their mind. There are many that walk, run, cycle, marathon on a regular basis and are still on meds, just plain stupid, or suffer from something other than what a walk can cure. It's not THE key, but it does help.
