I lift weights almost every day, and it certainly has an impact on my performance. For men, having an orgasm releases relaxing hormones (serotonin, prolactin, etc.) and I feel quite drained afterward and not really in the mood to workout.

I never fully masturbate before a workout for that reason, though I could hardly refuse a morning/afternoon fuck with a girl that slept over.

If I do masturbate, I make sure not to cum and only edge a little, which actually provides me a little high and some motivation. I workout at home, and might continue with some more edging right after my workout (this is actually good for testosterone levels). I usually prefer to cum later in the evening after my shower or just before going to bed.

Girls are probably a lot different though. Most of them probably don't really feel physically drained after an orgasm, though abstaining and feeling horny while working out might have a positive effect on motivation.

In terms of hormones and the likes, I don't really think it has a major impact, though having an active sex life does overall.

In other words, just do whatever feels good to you.
For me, it depends on the time of day that I'm working out.

If I'm at the gym during an afternoon/evening and I'm already a little tired from the day, sex/masturbating can drain my energy and motivation. If it's in the morning (and especially on a weekend), then it doesn't always have the same effect.
I run just about every morning weather permitting. I have run right after having sex (with men and with women) and it never seemed to have any effect on my stamina. I have also have masturbated right before going to kickboxing (which is usually in the evening) and many times I seem to have more energy (probably just on a high from the orgasm or what I was thinking of when doing it). However if I was to have a very intense orgasm or series of multiples culminating in me squirting, I would think that would severely hurt my ability to workout as I have had times where it was hard to walk since my legs felt like jelly!

I know many athletes abstain from sex before games but I have read that it usually doesn't make much difference in your energy level. I do think that it has a greater effect on men that it does on women
For men, it's not such a great idea, as it does tend to make you overly relaxed and less focused, killing the motivation to exercise. I only make sure to masturbate before a leg day if I already have some fluid congestion in the balls. Otherwise, the hopping and running could become very painful in the end... Yes, I found it out the hard way once.

Sex after a good workout is just awesome, though.

While MOST coaches would have athletes of EITHER gender abstain a more enlightened type; KNOWING that while MALES burn testosterone during sex and women burn ESTROGEN thus RAISING their testosterone level NATURALLY; would realize THAT for FEMALES having sex just a short time PRIOR to an event would in reality be beneficial! (Another way it sucks to be male at times! LOL)
I've never found that it affects me, hell, I think it allows me to focus more on my workout in the gym and no on others near me! Nonetheless, there have been a couple small antidotal studies, so rather worthless, that suggested it made no difference, and may have even boosted performance to have sex just prior to a strenuous workout.

I wonder however, unless you are a professional, or it's the largest event of the year for you, does it truly mater if you lose a fraction of your peak? And that's if it actually does make a difference at all.

For me, yes, it makes a difference. To keep progressing in bodybuilding, you have to hit the extra repetition that the next guy might not even dare to attempt.

I really have to be in the right mood and retain all my focus to achieve that properly. And I'm far from being a professional, mind you.

No, not a pro here. I'm just someone who's pretty active in team sports (netball at college level) and wants to get the most out of their workout each time smile
I personally find that it affects my game, if not physically then psychologically. Like in my mind, I feel slower or more lethargic.

As stated by others, the thought is it can be draining physically. It would seem to make sense to me that it should be an after, preferred after, and not a "before." The reason being is to build tension and focus adrenaline. If you were speaking of a climax or masturbation DURING~ now you are talking! It happens.
