Liz,

Interesting on the strings. Over time have they retained your favor? The bending tension sounds interesting and might be helpful. I hit the strings pretty hard when playing my songs. Much lesss so on some session work and acoustic that I do.

Currently, I am running regular EB Regular slinky on my Teles. John Pearse on my acoustics. I'd like something different for my Les Paul (preferably a little darker). I set up my own guitars these days (with a little repair / setups for others). I also have built a few guitars. So I don't break strings often due to challenges with the guitar. However I pull things out of tune on non-hardtails. And slide the bridge on my archtop. (I said I have a heavy touch at times). I despise coated strings. The tone dampening does not appeal.

I notice substantial differences in technique and quality in acoustic string brands. However I haven't seen the same care / innovation in electric strings. I will try your suggestion.

Hi, everyone. My name is Liz, and... and I'm an addict.

Everyone: "Hi, Liz."

Hey. So, I've been using effects pedals for quite a while now. At first, it was just a bit of a cheap thrill, but more recently it has started to affect my bank balance. What started off as a few pounds here and there is now quite a bit more. The Mooer and Tone City stompboxes were good to begin with, but over time they became a gateway to harder stuff. You all probably know what I'm talking about. Before I knew it, Boss, Electro-Harmonix, and MXR boxes had become Strymon, Origin Effects, and Walrus Audio masterpieces glimmering in oceanic turquoise, oxblood red, and sun-fire yellow. The only pedals that give me the fix I need now are high-end and boutique.

Stranger #1: "How do they make you feel?"

Oh, don't get me wrong, they make me feel fucking great. I can run some delicious overdrive into my Big-Sky reverb, add a pinch of delay and I am gone for a whole afternoon. They are the most incredible, ethereal, atmospheric sounds you can imagine. If God played electric guitar, that is what it would sound like. Warm, chewy, driven-tube notes with sustain that rolls on and on forever until finally fading into nothingness like a wisp of intangible cloud.

Stranger #2: "Woah."

I know, right? Anyway, my fiancée said that I have to come here to get some counselling and I think that's probably for the best, so here I am.

Stone Deaf's "Our Story" page starts with:

obsession and moving on to design and manufacturing of our own pedals"

So, I guess you'll be designing and manufacturing your own pedals in a couple of years ;)

The Tremotron is a freaky stompbox, but it also has a freaky price for a tremolo pedal

Btw, I'd be interested to find a tremolo effect where the rate is controlled by the pitch of the sound. So in a way a bit like the tremolo-like effect when two tones are slightly out of tune and you bend one of them. One of my favorite songs has this effect, but it's all synths. I'd like something like that for my bass. Does anyone know of a pedal that has such a feature?

Unfortunately the album version is nowhere to be found online, just the radio edit, which is a bit of a watered down version as its composition doesn't have the right build up in my opinion. Anyway, the effect is pretty clear, right from the start:

That would be awesome. Would love to design and manufacture my own guitar effects.

Pretty vanilla. My Line 6 amp has a lot of tricks, but the one pedal I love is my old Boss Compression Sustain - gives a great tone. I tend to not use most of the pedals I've collected - have a Chorus I like for some things.

I really like the effect in that music video. I'm not aware of any effect pedal that will dynamically adjust the tremolo rate based on pitch. The closest I've come across would be the Keeley Dynatrem which controls the rate and depth based on how hard you strike the strings.

Thanks, but I have the CD at home. I just wanted to share it with you all ;) But awesome that you found, or have, the album version. Way better than the radio edit, no? Now if only someone would put it on youtube so I can plaster it all over the forum here

Btw, that's Alison Goldfrapp, of Goldfrapp, singing in this song. No idea if she's actually singing or just doing 'vocals' ;)

As for the tremolo, I've seen some that do what the Keeley pedal does (rate controlled by input volume/attack), but for rate controlled by tone maybe guitars are just a bit too noisy to make it into a nice effect. That might be an advantage that synths have over guitars: their source signal seems more 'pure'.

Edit: found the CD version of the song on YouTube:

Not sure what kind of sound to associate with that. Cute purring or grinding pink noise. Probably everything in between.

BTW, from a true effects junkie like yourself I'd expect them to have a separate reverb tank. Don't think your Big Sky can do the crash sound a spring reverb can make ;)

The Big Sky would file your tax returns if you asked it nicely.

Miss my electric guitar. Never very great at playing it, and my equipment wasn't all that amazing, but I had a lot of fun making a hell of a racket in the garage as a kid. I had a boss distortion pedal that seemed to get the most action - forget what it was called, but it was orange. I also had a cool digital delay that was fun to mess around with.

But grad school meant more bills and less time to play, so I sold it all off. Maybe I'll buy another after I graduate.

Don't believe everything that you read.

so, i got a gift cert for my birthday and am looking at a Boss RC1 Looper, cause it's like a one sprite band... any thoughts on whether or not i need this or if i should just teach my cat to play the bass parts instead?

I think you really just need a double neck guitar.

My Vox amp has loads of effects on it, but I also have three pedals as well. I love the metal pedal, but it really shakes the house.

My favourite at the moment is the delay pedal when playing some pink Floyd riffs, especially coming back to life. It sounds great, and would sound even better if I didn't make mistakes.

I hardly use the Vox effects except for compression which is always on. There are some weird ones on there as well. Very weird.

I love my guitar, but wish I was a lot better than I am.

I used to be a pervert. In here, I'm normal!

The RC-1 is a wicked looper. I don't think Boss have ever made a bad effects pedal (with the exception of the Metal Zone, lol).

The TC Electronic Ditto Looper is also great if you're on a budget or just want something really simple.

Edit: Did post about the Digitech Trio but it's only the Plus model which has the looper functionality and that's a lot more pricey.

Did you get your new pedal? smile

I got to play Old Love by Eric Clapton on a £10,000 guitar last week and I'm having dreams about it. Unfortunately, I think the owner might notice if I swap his PRS John Mayer Super Eagle II with a cardboard cutout. *sniffs*
