My laptop, the charging port burnt out of it. The dogs and I had an arguement one afternoon and the laptop fell of my lap and onto the floor, the side where the port is. The cord was plugged in and rammed into the port. It was okay for a few days, but it popped one day, started smoking and was done working. The laptop if fine, I was able to log onto with just the battery, but without he port and ability to charge battery, it is now sitting in my room not being used. Is it easy to change these ports out? Are they interchangable from other computers? Any help appreciated.

It depends on the make and model. Some have them soldered to the motherboard, and some are little modules. If it's a module, it's a simple case of opening it up and replacing the module.

Okay, Thanks Stardrinking. I will check tomorrow and maybe look up the model online and see what I can find out. Cheers!

eBay is always a good source of cheap laptop parts, and if you're not desperate, ordering them from China is always a good option.

I'd be thinking more in terms of removing the hard drive and putting it into another laptop. Hearing that something was making smoke probably means there is more damage than just some broken bit near the impact point. I would not put much faith in the remaining hardware, myself.

I hope your hard disk was OK afterward. After a fall, with the computer on, the disk contents can be damaged by jarring impacts. Sometimes the drive can handle minor shocks, but sometimes it can't, and your whole disk may be unusable, or possibly very difficult to recover data off of.

In that case, you will want to have a backup somewhere. You have a backup somewhere, right? If you don't, then a new laptop will be the least of your problems. Good Luck

Ok, if the DC adapter is soldered onto the motherboard, you're SOL. Most people will try to fix it by essentially slapping some more solder on it, even if it's modular. In which case the days before it needs to be replaced again is in the double digits. It's a very tricky repair. Mostly I recommend people just get a new machine. Predominately because in most instances it is soldered, and the only surefire method to fixing this is a new motherboard, which between parts and labor usually costs more than a new machine, and laptop motherboards are notoriously difficult to find for the correct model. It interfaces with pretty much everything in such a way that means you almost universally need to get the exact correct part, it's also tricky to replace as laptop parts are rarely entirely modular. That being said, the HDD/SDD is extremely easy to remove and put into a roughly 3 dollar case, which can act as an external hard drive and has a perfect backup of everything in it.
And I've only begun fucking with you people.
