I just bought the book yesterday, I wanted to see what all of the hype was about. Frankly, the fact that this book was about BDSM totally took me by surprise.. I really wasn't expecting it but maintained an open mind while reading.. along with the fact that EL James insists on using the reference "cocks his/her head to the left" one too many times. I think she got a thrill out of saying cock so much honestly, and let's not forget the drawn out Dominant/Submissive contract that was lingered on for like eons. I am now on the 16th Chapter, when Christian visits Ana after her graduation and fucks her twice and just leaves her.. I can't help but feel enticed by Christian's character in a weird way, my curiosity for BDSM is definitely there even though I know I could never follow through with it and yet- I just feel so sad for Ana!
I don't particularly love the book, but I heard that there's a movie coming out for this book, supposedly Ryan Gosling and Alexis Bledel are being considered for the roles of Christian and Ana. I'd love to see the film, Ryan Gosling as a dark and mysterious billionaire with a haunting secret? Now that... THAT I do like ;)

While away on holiday, I bought "50 shades of Mr Darcy" by "William Codpiece Thackery". I have to say I have never laughed so much in my life.
It's a parody crossover of 50 shades of Grey and Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth Bennet becomes a clumsy heroine who thinks she isn't beautiful but others think she is hot. I was thinking "Wow Mr Thackery, got Ana's character/personality down pat for Elizabeth."
I do recommend it if you are a Jane Austen Fan or if you want to Laugh at 50 shades.

Ideal D/s relationships are harmonious. They don't work when you have one person who is a sadist, and another who fear masochism. There were a lot of things in this novel that fall under the topic: NEVER DO THIS IN A REAL D/s RELATIONSHIP. Things like forcing it to work if you are a sadist and the other person fears masochism; presenting a relationship contract to a virgin; entering a relationship with a dysfuctional person.

I seriously doubt it. Only on the professional / public play level. If you are a professional Domina who offers services for pay, then you have this professional aloofness for your clients. The same can be said if you engage in public "red rooms of pain", since you usually don't have a great deal of time to get to know your partner. But Christian Grey saying he had "zero" feelings for his ex-subs only serves to emphasise his dysfunctional psyche.

I don't think there is a yes or no answer to this. I tend towards "no" - not because they have pain. I believe most enter it because they desire a higher intensity of sexual emotion and pleasure than other people do.

There are no "normal" rules. The Dom makes them, the sub either agrees to them or disagrees to them. If the sub disagrees, then the Dom has the option to change them. The rules fit the couple. So what seems insane to you is perfectly acceptable to others. There are slave-subs who are not even allowed to sleep in a bed at all. Others are allowed, but don't want to, because they crave humility.

Usually. Some rules are subject to change. Let's not forget that not only the sub has rules to live by, but so does the Dom. Some couples make the rules strict forever; other couples have "normal" lives and use the rules during "play time" (sexual play or contact). It all depends on what the Dom and the sub agree to.

I had no desire to read these books at first but the more I heard about them the more I wanted to see what the fuss was all about.. So, I bought them and began to read them.. I think the BDSM aspect of these books are sick.. It is stupid to say what CG is into is a BDSM lifestyle.. What he is, Is NOT a Dom/Master.. He has issues and is simply broken. Clearly not fixable since it took beating on women to make himself feel better. I do like the concept of the books in away. I don't like how something bad was always going on. Every other page they were in danger and the other page was them having sex. They can make it a bit more real then that. But, I did finish them, and will more then likely watch the movie"s" if they make them.
But to me Fifty Shades of Grey is NOT at all a good example of BDSM.

In answer to your questions, Fifty Shades of Gray is to BDSM what Good Night, Moon is to Astronomy. As in not much. One is absolute fantasy written by a person with no real experience, the other is a lifestyle lived by real people.
Why can't this book just be enjoyed as a work of fiction, nothing more. I loved the series as I stated before in this thread. Is it a BDSM guide or bible? No it is not. It is nothing more than reading for fun and enjoyment. Lets not analyze this to death, this is like beating a dead horse lol.

I haven't watched the movie as from what I seen in the trailer the acting is so wooden and Anastasia looks to old to be 21. Plus it is directed by a middle aged craddlesnatcher so ...
I read the books, but I haven't seen the movie... yet. Now that it's on HBO I just might watch it. My issue with the books isn't the BDSM elements... it was the piss poor character development. Christian is an immature petulant ass who is spoiled and must always have his way. Ana is a spineless wimp who can't stand up for herself for shit, let's Christian call the shots, and is made to fell like shit when she tries to do things her way.
I get she's madly in love with him and he falls for her as well, but really, it takes both of them three books to somewhat evolve... and I stress the somewhat. He might be amazing in business, but he sucks in personal relations. I get he was abused before he was adopted, I get he was taken advantage of by an older woman, but for fuck's sake... if he really loves this woman (Ana), then he should have pulled his head out of his ass way sooner than he does. No woman likes to be treated like a child ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Yet... she accepts this as normal.
There is a huge difference between role-play, BDSM sex play, and being hell bent on being a petulant, immature asshole. Maybe if Ms. James had done a bit more with her character development, people wouldn't trash her writing so much.
But this site is good at that or they wouldn't have an emoticon for it. 
I think people are losing touch on those 'in between' concepts a little.
