I'm not a guy, but I have some insight in this area.

1) Perhaps sex is not freely available to him. Perhaps he's shy...Feels unattractive....Is disabled.
2) Perhaps the transactional nature of pay to play has an appeal. Exchanging money offers a thrill.
3) Perhaps he likes knowing that it's a sure thing, rather than an open question involving dinner and a movie first.
3) Perhaps there are time constraints - he's visiting town on business, and he wants a very specific kind of experience in a very specific window of opportunity.
4) Perhaps his tastes veer towards things that most women wouldn't do for free - i.e., anal, BDSM.
5) Perhaps he likes being with strangers, and the odd pro can satisfy that hunger for strange.
6) Perhaps he thinks of being with a prostitute as being something purely "physical" That the money enacts an emotional and symbolic barrier, and thus the exchange of funds protects his primary relationship. i.e., being with a sex worker isn't the same as "cheating"
7) Perhaps he has a taste for a very specific kind of woman - porn stars, models - who are otherwise out of his league. He can rent one for an hour, where he could never afford one otherwise.
8) Perhaps he has a very specific fetish - for Asian women, for latex bondage gear, for spanking, whatever. The odds of that fetish being satisfied under normal circumstances might be very low - especially since few women care to be objectified so narrowly in their routine relationships.

There are scores of reasons why sex workers exist and why men (and it's mostly men) continue to patronize them -- even as sexual mores have changed. At heart, there's an inequality of supply and demand.

Bingo, I totally agree and this is one thing for sure that VirgoGo forgot about Sometimes you just have to be quick and disreet and can't or don't need a date or someone calling you at the wrong time.

And maybe we're just quibbling over semantics, but I don't consider discretion a reason to visit a prostitute, instead, I think of it as an essential/integral part of the transaction. You see the prostitute because you want A, B, or C. You require discretion as part of the deal, just like she requires payment.

There are some extraordinarily expensive options, and surely those clients hope for a pretty rarefied and erotic experience. I have no idea if those swanky GFE-encounters are "worth it", but imbuing an afternoon/evening with tons of anticipation and investment must help provide some excitement? The psychology of high-end sexwork is also like that of any luxury product/service. The more it costs, the more it must be worth, to a certain kind of person.

Of course, there are lots of unpleasant reasons that "inspire" some men go to see sex workers, I just listed some of the more positive ones. That list is nowhere near complete.

I've never heard anyone say, "I'm going to see a hooker because I want discretion." If all you wanted was "discretion," a lawyer or a therapist might be better choices because you're not at risk of getting busted with one of them.

It's often some variant on, "I'm going to see an escort because I want to try things my wife will no longer do. But my wife can never know."
Or more colorfully, "I'm going to see a hooker because I want to get fucked with a strap-on while monkeys watch. Thank god she's discreet."

Unlike what some might think, it's not a matter of desperation. I prefer it to any kind of pickup situation. I know she's there for the income (hey, we've all got bills), she knows I'm there for the sex, it's so much more comfortable when we can be completely open about it.

I've got a couple of go-to women who probably don't fit the stereotype. They've got jobs and their own actual life. Both do a little part time dancing (where I met them) and when they got to know me, they let me know that they would take care of me in exchange for a little help with expenses. I'm happy. They're happy.
