Isn't panties the American term and knickers the UK term? Either works for me when reading.
Correct .

So have I. My personal choice, women wearing men's boxers. I stand corrected, but if I were a designer of women's underwear I would market boxers to women's taste

Panties! Perhaps my favorite word in the English lexicon. Let's see, Palimpsest, opulent, cornucopia, quotidian, nycthemeron, semilacrum, panties. Yup, it's panties. :P

I'm an American; here, "panties" is the default word and by far the most commonly used. I was shockingly far along in life before I realized that American women don't use "underwear" as a general term for anything worn under clothing. Here that word seems exclusively to mean, well, "panties."
"Knickers" is British or, I suppose, a term used anywhere the Union Jack ever flew. (Except here, of course, because America.)
I like the word, though.
