I am going to go on a bit of a tangent here so be warned.
Great question and this is one I've struggled with for a very long time as what I would write about and have always wanted to write about was my real life experience as a male exotic dancer in New Orleans. Oh hell yeah I was and I was a darned good dancer as well! I was with a troupe for a couple of years before I got hired to dance fulltime at a Club in the Quarter but working at this Club came with a rather big twist!
At this Club they put the boys and the girls up on a stage together then have them seductively strip each other down to G-strings and dance so provocatively the tourists used to drop their beer glasses on the floor! Freaking wild dude!
This was all back in the mid-80s and any of us that were around then know that live erotic entertainment was VERY different that what it is today but even more so the philosophies about what constituted beautiful live erotic entertainment were very different. For example, in present day show me where in the United States a person can see a male and female exotic dancer, perform together on stage? You can't and you won't! Such shows don't exist anymore as the Gods of Erotic Entertainment have suddenly decreed that if one were to look up the terms 'Striptease Duet' or 'Live Erotic Show' I can guarantee you'll see either a lesbian or gay dance act!
Years later I got back into stripping and would dance at a really nice place on Saturday nights. This joint had a separate section for the ladies in the back of the Club. The female exotic dancers would venture back to watch us though they were prohibited from doing so by the Manager. I got to know a couple of the girls really well and when I told them about the shows I did in NOLA they got super excited about it and wanted to put together such shows at that place. Girls actually wanting to be partnered by ruggedly handsome, chiseled males? HUH? Are you kidding? Its prohibited in Ohio for a male and female exotic dancer to even be in the same vicinity as one another!
Having pointed this out, I don't think anyone under the age of 35 could relate to the type of eroticism we catered to nor would they want to read about such stuff. Its just too far out for them! Who knows though? I'll keep trying to get something on print and see. You never know unless you try right?

I don't mean plagiarize, but if you don't have an original idea (and reading through the stories here over the years, very few of us really do including myself), then at least you can try to take an unoriginal idea and put your own spin on it. A short series I co-authored called Windows basically ripped off the premise of the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan Rom-Com You've got Mail, sexed it up, and then ran with it. Think of how many variations of "I met a hot chick in a bar and we got it on" have been published here. Or "seducing the babysitter." Or "The older man/woman educating the innocent but curious teen." There isn't much novelty in erotica. So steal stuff, and make it yours.

My first two stories were autobiographies to a large extent. The first was about the loss of my anal virginity. The sex part of that story is pretty accurate. The part of the story leading up to the actual sex isn't complete. My journey was very complicated. Essentially my lover acted out in role play a lot of things that had made me what I am sexually. The second is about the loss of my vaginal virginity which is pretty accurate from beginning to end.

Should have picked the name Abathur because that's pretty much my creative process; I start with a simple sentence or thought and I spin on it from that. Every potential story is pretty much like one of his experiments; I spin a strain and see how it evolves. Sometimes it's good and I start writing, but most of the times it's bad and gets sent back to the pool where it gets dissolved for the essence.
It also helps a lot that the characters are to a certain degree based on people I know. It could be the majority of their person, like how they talk, what kind of kinks they may have and so forth, or it could be like my last one; She's Swedish. Then the thought comes that let's just make her a horny drunkard. What's typically Swedish? The whole green pole for midsummer's Eve etc. So like Abathur I spin the strains and stories evolve.

My stories tend to be born while washing the dishes. Or during long drives. Anything mundane that allows my mind to freewheel gets the ideas to germinate. Scenarios pop in my head. "What ifs" like MallardFiona says. I jot them down when I can and then elaborate on them.

My issue is stealing from myself. I'll start writing and realize I've done that scene before or I'll read an older piece and realize that I basically redid a scene from it in a newer one. There's usually enough difference that I won't pull one of the stories down or anything but it kind of makes me wonder if I've just got a limited erotic vocabulary and I'm starting to run out of new fantasies.
