I'm working on a new story, and it's pretty good, but the setup takes a bit before we get to the sex. How long do you go before the sex in most of your stories?

I think it just depends on the story itself and how much you want to put into it. I'm kinda feeling the same way with a story I'm writing at the moment. I think it the first chapter(s) might not have a "scene" in it. But how I was thinking to get around it was by either putting in a masturbation "scene" or another idea is having a fantasy playing out in the character's head. There are a lot of things you could use though.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may not make 90% of the readers happy that it took some effort to get to the sex but the journey might just be as exciting.

I agree with HollyShamrock. My philosophy is if the story can engage the reader emotionally first, so they can relate to, and care about the characters, then it enhances the erotic buildup you're trying to achieve. Length really doesn't matter when someone is enjoying it. Personally, even if a story isn't great grammatically, or the writing is unpolished, as long as I can feel some emotion from and for the characters, I'll enjoy it no matter what if the plot grabs me and I want to know how it ends. However, if it's full of details that really don't belong or add to the story in any way, i.e., meaningless fillers/dialogue, then I'll get bored quite quickly and be more critical no matter how good the sex scenes might be later on.

That said, it helps to "know thy audience" if you are writing for a particular group rather than for yourself. From my short time here on Lush so far, it seems like people either gravitate to down and dirty sex without too much info about the characters/situation, while others prefer stories like I do. It's not easy to please both camps, so I believe writers should just write what THEY like and can get passionate about, because that's where I believe the best writing comes from. :-)

Hey Castlequeen
I reckon it depends on the storyline. I.e, do the characters previosuly know each other or does there have to be an introduction etc. It doesn't really matter how long it takes to get to the sex as long as the story flows and it's not just a sudden unexpected BAM scene that leaves people thinking....ok.

The key isn't when to start the sex, but how to hook the reader into going on instead of hitting backspace. You might check out the three winners in the winter writing contest (see: Contest Winners in, Categories). None of them jump right into bed, but all of them, especially Jamal, do a great job of using the opening to build sexual tension while developing the characters.

As with sex you can have it with or without foreplay.

For a single short story on Lush the sex is the focus for the whole piece - the rest of the narrative should be building up to or moving away from this part of the story. For a multi-part story, where you need an overarching plot, the sex needs to hang off the story more, so fitting in the wider world you're creating needs time.

That doesn't mean that you have to follow a regime of This is A, This is B (add more if necessary), They are in situation X, They perform N number of sexual acts, They fall asleep/go home. Just because the act of sex is in the last third or quarter of the story doesn't mean that you can't flirt with and tease the reader on the way there. That's what I try to do it anyway.

Why not read some stories instead

The last few times I attempted to create a story, I tried to imply the carnality. That's a bit more challenging...although it truly is (at least to me) a challenge to write about fucking and sucking in a different way or point of view, with each new story.

Some here can do this quite well. I am not one of those who can.

That's not true... I go through like 7 tissues when I read a wellmademale story. The carnality is what I like about them.

Interestingly, I've been thinking of creating a series, tentatively titled...

Tattle Tails

Naughty voices inside of my head have been whispering and chanting your name to me lately. I think the rare F-IV classed star's-bleached-blonde Pleadians are attempting to guide me towards a collaboration with the King.

I could use a few lessons, methinks - to get my A game back online.

Is it autobiographical? That would be sexy...

Seven tissues, eh? I guess Jeff's stories really bring tears to your eyes...

Yeah, I would have to agree a WellMade story can be really touching...I especially liked that last one about the retired circus midget that went into the anal bleaching business...

I mean, if that don't bring tears to your eyes...nothing will...

I've written stories that took a long while in the set up but in these the sex was secondary to the story. My latest story, Tasting Teresa was basically just about a sexual encounter. I wrote about meeting her and then the sex. Simple and to the point.
In making our baby much of the story was building the mood.

I think you need to know up front what kind of story you're writing. Once you do things fit naturally.

I find it depends what kind of story I'm writing. If it's erotica there really should be sex in every chapter... more than once if possible. But in a novel, I like to listen to my characters. Find out where their hearts and heads are at, and then go from there.

Having tried, I have concluded it is impossible for me to write fiction involving adults without an erotic scene or two. But none of my writing is what I would call "pure erotica". I see that as erotic writing done with the prime intention of being erotic. In all my writing, sex is secondary to character, plot, or moral development. So, when I am writing, I do not consider how long it takes to get to "the good parts"; I simply let the story take it's course. Then again, being the independent cuss that I am, I think I am not so much writing for an audience or to gain readership, as I am to examine myself, and my life and reasons for acting as I have or as I do.

When I was a Navy musician, they used to kid me that I played "noncommercial jazz". I think my writing is easily as non-commercial as my playing. That is, of course, a polite way of saying ,"No one wants to read that crap. Why do you bother putting it in words?" LOL

I am reminded of a charcoal drawing I own of George Washington's New Tomb, done in 1835 on very fine sandpaper, by one of my forebears. My grandmother once took it to Sturbridge Mass, to have it appraised, where they pronounced it "priceless". She always said she thought that might be a polite way of saying "worthless".

Likewise, I consider my writings and my non-commercial jazz playing, "priceless".

Hi,

I have written 2 stories now in Lush. Any good story needs an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction sets up the story explaining the characters, the setting and the reason why things progress later. The body can contain whatever you like to write, all the hot bits, the sex, and whatever. People understand the progression then from the introduction. And of course, it must have a suitable ending, in my story's case, an epilogue. This rounds of the story perfectly, letting the reader the results and conclusions from the body. They are not left wondering whatever happened. I write from the heart, with emotion and feelings. By reliving some of your own personal experiences, you know how the character feels. Translate those feelings into words and put some spice into the body.

It all depends on the story. I have written stories that have had a long intro with a strong sexual middle and end. On the other hand, I have written with a intro that was sexually charged, body of set up and a conclusion that was just as sexually charged as the intro. It all depends on your style of writing, the story line, and what is important to tie the story together. Sometimes the intro that provides a background for the story is just as important if not more so than the rest of the story (depending the high point or reason for the story).
