Escapism is the perfect word.

I found my love of reading the hard way. I was a rotten teenager and spent a lot, and I mean A LOT of time grounded.

When I couldn't watch TV, or even listen to the radio, I had to find a way out of my bedroom. Since I started reading, I have been:

A revolutionary war soldier (American and British) thanks to K. Roberts,

A Hobbit/troll/elf and wizard thanks to Tolkien,

A crew-member on the Enterprise thanks to a host of authors,

A monk in Medieval England thanks to E. Peters,

A detective in ancient Rome thanks to S. Saylor and L. Davis...

I have had conversations with John Adams thanks to D. McCullough,

I even got to do some deeper thinking about things thanks to Orwell, Salinger, Capote and Dante, just to name a few.

I have seen the Fattest Twins on their motorbikes, thanks to the Guinness Records people,

I have seen knights and dragons, space ships and aliens, Countries and continents half the world away!

I have read the "True Words" of at least 2 different Gods.

Thanks to an illustrated "how to do anything" book from Readers Digest, I learned how to tie a Windsor knot in a neck tie and make the ultimate paper airplane.

I could go on forever...the point is I have new and different ideas that I learned from books, I have knowledge (and power) that came to me only because I chose to read. I know I am a better person from reading books, and that is the real reason I love to read.

I like leaving reality for a bit and getting lost in my own little world.

I also enjoy learning new words and exploring varied writing styles.

I like having my mind taken to another place and lose myself in a book. Sometimes I like to think I'm the main charcacter, other times I like being a spectator anywhere the book takes me.

Most everyone sums it up here. The relaxation and feeling of escaping into the story I'm reading. I love to be able to get in tune with the characters involved and I feel satisfied when reading if I can relate to what they're going through in the storyline/plot.

I'm almost done with "Under the Dome" by SK now, and I have to say, I've enjoyed reading it very much...it's another good work by him and his overactive, trippy imagination smile.
