I posted my opinion on the thread regarding the scoring system and the same sentiments apply to comments as well. I don't give a flip about comments or scoring. If I am happy with it, that is all that matters to me. Truthfully, I am a miserable writer and without a lot of help,I would never have completed the story. I wrote a continuation to the original story, but was not happy with it, so I never submitted it. I am much better at writing music, so I think I'll stay in my own lane.

Keep at it, Andy. You will not find a writer anywhere who is ever 100% happy with their final draft.

I know it's a truism, but sometimes people forget that writing is a skill like any other. You would not expect a newbie to music to pick up a guitar and jam like Hendrix, would you?

The first story I posted on Lush when I was here in another guise ten years ago, was rejected three times before the mods would let it pass. I've come along way since then but any improvements I've made are because I love writing, practise the craft daily.

I've not read your story but looking at the comments it seems folk liked it. If it's just technique you struggle with, there are loads of useful links on Lush for you to peruse. The more you write, the more you will want to read, seeking out solutions to problems you encounter as you work. The more you read, the more you will want to write. It is a symbiotic relationship.

Good luck with your future writing.
I agree with Luca 100%. When I was in high school, I took a class called "Creative Writing" - an elective. I thought it would be an easy class, but I was so wrong! I BARELY escaped the class with a D! And I think the teacher only passed me so she wouldn't have to read any more of my work! She told me I needed to find another line of work - that being a writer was not my calling!

So when I wrote my first story here I was terrified it would be Creative Writing all over again. But my story (and all my hundreds of stories after) have been welcomed with open arms! If you are going to write or learn to write, Lush is the perfect vehicle for it. The Mods are super helpful, and the people here are great as well. Don't give up!

Thanks for the encouragement, however my heart is just not into it right now. I have had several offers for assistance and at some time I may attempt writing again.

No that was for the advanced class. I had to use the burned stick end and cave drawings for my stories! Hence the spelling errors! LOL!
I think it is courtesy to leave a comment. My stories get a lot of views with few comments. I make sure I thank the people who take the time to comment.
I don't leave comments.

I've dealt with enough writers to know that a comment can lead a 15 page questionnaire from the author so they "can improve".

I do vote if I like a story.

I can tell you right off to count your blessings on Lush. Lush has by far the best comment to view ratio of any of the big 3 sites. The last time I ran a full track on my numbers for all three sites, Lush generated a comment for about every 1500 views, while the average elsewhere was about every 4500 views. Feedback in the form of comments may be rare on Lush, but it's far more likely than anywhere else.

Keep in mind that a large percentage of your readers may very well be doing so one handed. Leaving a comment about a story that hit the spot may the the last thing on their mind at the bottom of the page.

people do that? seriously?

OMG yes. 15 pages is a bit of an exaggeration, but only a bit.

That is the funniest fucking thing I've seen in a while.

Yes, exactly that sort of thing. I'm suprised Dickens didn't pull a draft of Great Expectations and ask for a quick critique.

Tough call — making me choose just one. If I had to hold one story up that epitomises your gift for storytelling, it would have to be, "Dorothy Does Neverland".

After she and her friend Wendy share tales of their misspent youth, Dorothy decides she would like a bit of Hook action herself. So ingenious of you to make the good captain's hook detachable, the fixing point for so many contraptions capable of bringing a girl pleasure. And having the crocodile turn up just when it did! Pure erotic genius.

— oh, sorry! Wrong Lost Girl. You're the writer who did that Alice through the looking glass thingy for the Lush masturbation competition, aren't you? The one where Alice fails to get through the mirror after seeing her own beautiful reflection.

Or am I'm confusing your story with one of Alan Moore's graphic thingies?

Sorry, I'm having a senior moment! What's your name again?
Double post. Nothing to see here. Please move along.

note to self: delete all of Luca's stories.

i actually own a lovely giant sized hardback version of Moore's Lost Girls, btw. it's def. not for children. lol also, after Alice, i am so doing Oz and maybe Neverland. and then, a Mashup of all three! sometime in the year 2056... smile

Listen, Sprite. I know you're trying your best, but I'd very much appreciate you speeding up your writing schedule. I very much doubt I'll still be resident in this particular meat-cage by the 2050s and so will be unable to enjoy the final mashup of your delightfully twisted imagination.
I am also one puzzled by the lack of comments when compared with readers. I comment but don’t score because I don’t believe the scoring conveys much. A 4 is considered to be a bad score. I can’t believe a mod would allow a story to be approved if it wasn’t worth a 5. Perhaps a thumbs up or down could convey the same message without the numerical value.

I always reply to comments made on my stories to thank the writer for their opinion.

Thanks for your confidence in us but, alas, it may be misplaced. We do our best to see they get polished up (usually by the author, with our input if it's accepted) and readable without a lot of distracting errors and such - and of course we kick the ones that are pushing unacceptable content like underage, or violent stuff - but we're not so demanding that we insist every story be Pulitzer-worthy. Or even Clitorides, for that matter.

In any form of literature, as in life, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So many different authors and readers and so many different topics and writing styles, some stories will inspire a 5 vote from one person but less from another. Still, for a 4 to be considered a bad score is silly.

If you're going to put it out there, do it recognizing that readers' opinions might run the gamut and don't get all out of sorts over a couple of 4, or even 3 scores. (I would hope that anyone that disliked a story enough to give it a 1 or 2 would have been bright enough to quit reading something they so hated somewhere along the way and have the decency to disqualify themselves from voting on something they didn't even finish, but that's just my take.) The thing is, write for you, what you like and take pride in; do your best at it and don't just throw any old piece of garbage you dashed out in a few minutes - didn't read over, didn't carefully proofread, didn't edit at all - out there and expect praise. You haven't earned it if you didn't make the effort.

Work at it a little, polish your skills, ask for help. We're always happy to help! If you've done your best - really done your best, and you know it - be proud of it, let us enjoy your talent and ignore the few naysayers. One thing you'll notice about the true low-scorers, the 3 and below crowd; rarely have they ever written anything themselves. That should tell you all you need to know.
