Another one for Venice. And that's Italy, not Beach.

The characters, tension and sex are going to make your story. The scene's irrelevant. Hell, you could pull something interesting and engaging out of 1930s Adelaide to add the splash of colour you're after. Seriously, setting it against the backdrop of the development of the pie floater would actually be something novel.
My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill.

don't listen to him sprite! A setting changes the whole mood of a story in my humble opinion. like the 100 acre wood, right Wilful?
Never been to Hollywood but been loads of times to Paris. Regardless of the period I would always go for Paris. Romance, culture, scenery and erotica all rolled into one.
“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
1930s Hollywood...

So, Moscow it is!

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Oooh!!! So exciting!

As for the setting, that entirely depends on the context of your story idea. Not that I'm fishing or anything...
For me the overriding concerns for Hollywood in the 1930s would be the Noirish aspect. I would be continually thinking of Raymond Chandler and crooked flatfeet. On the other hand the 30s in Paris would have the specter of the world war soon to overflow across France and all of Europe.
I just voted Paris. I am a bit of Francophile and actually started a story set in France last year. I think Paris gives so many options.

Much of the glamour of 1930's Hollywood existed only on the big screen. Segregation, sexism, and corruption was rampant. Prohibition existed until 1933. The flappers went out and stars like Gabel, Grable, Rogers and Astaire were in. It was an inexpensive way for a depressed society living through some of the most difficult economic years in US history to peek into a fantasy land of luxury.

Of course, if your story incorporated any of these themes then Hollywood would be a great place for your piece.

If your setting is not as gritty, less desert sand and more refined decadence, then I would say Paris.

As for Venice...that just gave me an idea.

How about Havana, Cuba during the high life, pre-Castro, Tropicana, American mobsters, gambling, burlesque, sex clubs and brothels, rum and cigars.

"Havana's Tropicana cabaret has been the last word in near-carnal excess for more than 60 years, most famously during the iron-fisted rule of Fulgencio Batista, who seized power in Cuba in 1933 and presided over one of the most blood-soaked and corrupt, yet frighteningly successful, regimes of the century. Bankrolled by the U.S. government, supported by an army of thugs and torturers, and aided by American mobster Meyer Lansky, Batista built an island of fantasy dedicated to the seven deadly sins."

But... of the two you mentioned, I voted Hollywood, purely because of the genre. I think it might be a little more fun to play with, but maybe that depends on the style of story you're planning.

oo - never considered Havana. this one's gonna be set in Paris - it kind of works a little better for the story, plus, the masses have spoken. cuba, tho... yeah, there's a future story in there somewhere... smile

Paris any time. Being a romantic, I can't think of any other place in this world which matches Paris.
