Dan Brown

I'd have to agree with that - book put down and never picked up again. Think it ended in a charity shop
I laugh a bit at the Stephanie Meyers and J. K. Rowling - they're Young Adult authors, didn't you realize? That says a lot about grammar, content, and overall construct.

Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights - supposedly a love story.not much love a lot of jealousy and spiteful behaviour, no love from what I saw. Classic? Not for me...

This - ugh. I can't stand Bronte and others of her 'flavor.' What the hell? Everyone who claims they love her writing has to be full of it because I found it nearly indecipherable and full of poo.
God. that bible thing is kind of dry, though i kind of liked the sequel.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Sprite: Be sure to check out 'Song of Solomon', especially the juicy parts.

I agree, approximately 100% with Matilda.

My big three over-rated writers are: Melville, Proust, and Kerouac.

RUMPLATIONS: AwesomeHonky Tonk and Cyber Bar
Home of the Lush "IN" crowd: indecent, intoxicated, and insolvent

Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwords. -- ROBERT HEINLEIN
Dan Brown ~ for all of the reasons previously listed

EL James ~ For fuck's sake. "Mommy porn?" Uh, nooo. I verify better stuff than that tripe. And she's done NOTHING for the world of BDSM except bring it to light. Far too many women are suddenly thinking their poor sex lives mean they need to be "bossed around", and too many "bossy" men are calling themselves Doms because of her flowery prose.

I LIKE Terry Goodkind, actually. I couldn't stand the TV show because it completely fucked the story-line of the book up. It was a little dull in places, sure, but overall a good read.

And Stephen King is very much an acquired taste. Like absinthe, you either like it, or you don't.
"Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader - not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon." -E.L. Doctorow
I'm a JOHN GRISHAM fanatic. I felt compelled to list down why to me he is a brilliant writer and not as overrated as STEPHENIE MEYER.

Grisham graduated from Mississippi State University before attending the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981 and practiced criminal law for about a decade. He also served in the House of Representatives in Mississippi from January 1984 to September 1990. He began writing his first novel, A Time to Kill, in 1984, and it was published in June 1989. As of 2008, his books had sold over 250 million copies worldwide.

Grisham is one of only three authors to sell two million copies on a first printing , the others being Tom Clancy and J.K. Rowling .

Grisham's first bestseller was The Firm. Released in 1991, it sold more than seven million copies. The book was later adapted into a feature film in 1993. Eight of his other novels have also been adapted into films: The Chamber, The Client, A Painted House, The Pelican Brief, Skipping Christmas, The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury, and A Time to Kill.*

His books have been translated into 29 languages and published worldwide. Hopefully his list of achievements would help convince others.

I'm with you on Grisham, I find his books absorbing. Although it's all subjective. Of the classics I think Jane Austen overrated, I much prefer the Bronte sisters.

i prefer not to say ... :P
Robert Jordan- I bought a copy of The Wheel of Time. I never even finished page one - it brought tears to my eyes, I was utterly bored...

Terry Goodkind. Stylistically blah. Seriously though, he writes the same book over and over with virtually the same characters. The TV show was alright. The books. I couldn't get through the first.

I liked the first one, read the series, felt it was a waste of my time. Just rehashed the same story line over and over. I much preferred the Crown of Stars series from Kate Elliot.

Frank Herbert. I know Dunne is supposed to be good, but I just can't get into it. It bores me to snoring every time I've tried to read it; it's almost better then a psychology book for insomnia!

My brother loved Dune, I never could get into the book.

The miniseries HOWEVER, is absolutely top notch. Quality acting jobs from everyone.

I've tried several times. I hear it's good, but I just can't get into it. Every time I try, I wake up with the kindle on my face, having enjoyed a good nap.

I basically don't watch tv so that leaves me out on the miniseries.
DH Lawrence... I think he's awful

Charles Bukowski too - someone close to me was insistent that I love him as much as he did... I never did though...
Stephanie Meyer, Robert Jordan and George R.R. Martin top my list - I know, go ahead and flame that last one, but 'Song of Fire and Ice' is something I just could NOT get into
Stephanie Meyer, Grisham, I can't remember who wrote Bridge of Madison County but that guy, Hemmingway, Clancy.
I think it is the evolution within the literary world you need to take in consideration

Not just anyone can sit down and enjoy the original texts of pride and prejudice and the ones who can, will be sadden by J K Rowling or stephanie meyer's works.

however that said, the youth of today have not be taught how to read and understand Jane Austen's works.

The english language has evolved, and is evolving every day.. when you realize the children of today only have to spell as a word sounds and not the correct spelling to get a pass. or that the only subject where text language is not allowed is in English, then it shows the evolution is starting from the top of the political tree and not from the streets or children as we sometimes perceive.

The Authors of today may not meet your literary refinements but they are doing one hell of a job in selling their works. I bow to their abilities.
I'm going to add...Charlotte Bronte to my list of overrated authors.
