How about a 10 point scoring system rather than 5?

How about a system where my stories just have a 5 option, and all the others have 1-4? That couldn't be too hard, surely? ?????

so, you think my stories don't deserve 5s...?

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

One simple comment. In all my years on this site, I have never, ever, looked at a score to decide whether to read the story or not. I do find them interesting. But they are simply not any sort of determinant to whether I will pay attention.

So, any scoring system is fine with me. Please, just read my stuff and give me a comment now and then.

I love your philosophy.

I read stories based on a multitude of factors. Those which have an interesting title, a one liner which draws me in, enticing tags ... And a quick scan of the first paragraph will be enough usually to see if the author has the chops or piques my interest.

I suspect most people feel the same.

Maybe we should do away with the scoring system altogether?
The scoring system does not reflect on the effort a person puts into the story. I believe the comments are more of an indication of how well a story is received.
You'd have to come up with another qualifier to replace the 10 vote minimum for contests. Also would need to change the criteria for the "Popular" tab on the story listings ( # of comments, perhaps? or # of Favorites, or # of Likes ) or eliminate it entirely.

I don't know how it would sit with the readers who do vote, either. Granted, you get almost as many comments here as you get votes, but there are always a subset who prefer to show their approval without having to come up with words. I'm sure there are those who don't feel comfortable leaving comments on contest stories, as well. That's fairly common for a variety of reasons.

Maybe just replace it with a like button? No dislike. Convert the current # of votes each story has over into the like count.

That would certainly stick in the craw of anybody who purposely put a malicious lower vote on a story — changing their poo-flinging into defacto approval. LOL

Then those readers who prefer the silent approval can see it stamped on the story, and know they've made their contribution.

Just spitballing some things, as I'm perfectly fine with things as they are.

I don't really give a flip about the scoring. I have only written one story, was satisfied with it, which is all that matters. I attempted to write a continuation, but the story did not please me, so I never submitted it. I had rather write music, so the best thing for me is to stay in my own lane.

Read RejectReality's response. It's largely something I have said a few times over the years. Most people use it as a "like" system by giving a 5 as long they like the story so make it one.

I agree but with some people, a 5 doesn't equal a like, it is better. Nothing will change anyway so this whole thing is a waste of time.

The scoring is only a number system and doesn't reflect on your words. It's only a number between 1 and 5. The "real" number is what the writer feels as she/he sends it in. The comments are what I look at. Changing the scoring system now would be a complete disaster.

I agree..

This would stop the people that come in and give low scores just because they dont like the person. I like the idea of the like button. Again just my

How easy and useful would it be if there was am option for a half grade? Say you clicked any score under 5, then there'd be an option for a"+" or ".5" to click. I do like the "like" option. Could a score vote be tied to a comment? The score is listed in the comment you leave.

I don't know how difficult it would be to do but it would help and the system could remain the same leaving it alone.

IIRC, it used to be that the score message in your timeline said who left it. It was anonymized for a reason but I forget the reason. Whatever it was, I assume it would be an issue for this idea, too.

Knowing who left any particular score is just making room for silly squabbles and conflicts. I'm happy to keep the scoring anonymous as it is. We all know it is rather tempting to assume the person leaving a comment is the same one making a score at the same time, within a minute or so. But we don't know for certain. I think it does keep some of the infighting about voting to a minimum.

This is a reason for them to keep all of the scores a secret during competitions.

I have no problem with people that drop "low" scores on my stories and are honest enough to say why. As long as it's not out of spite/spam, it's great. In fact, if someone has such a negative reaction to something I write, it's likely because it was so well written it struck a nerve, which perversely makes me happy.

The comments are what matters.

This...

I have had people drop 1s and 2s on mine. On every single piece where someone feels it needs a low score, I would really love to know why.

It hurts to get those down scores. But I think almost all have received them. The only option is to stop allowing scoring. But I've grown to accept it as part of the world we live in.
I can accept a low score if the person can leave me a reason as to why. But its the hit and run that gets me. I know we all have our own opinions and I would rather know who is giving the low score as to it being anonymous . ( Please, no one needs to scream at me, its just my opinion )

I've struggled with the low scores for years now on Lush and Lit. There are trolls who take great pleasure in giving a low score, especially on Lit. Those I can't accept because they are mean and cruel. Hot stories have disappeared because of them.
