This is an extremely hard one to answer as I love every band mentioned on this page. But I have listen most continuously, by merit, listening to Paul Simon for as long as I have been alive, and the "no-name" band he assembled in Africa on his Graceland tour there together with Brazilian percussion, remains with him some 21 years, and brings blended diversity of sound and style at least as good as DMB, and the most meaningful lyrics written. He has not won every major music award obtainable for no good reason. I do not wish to deny the greatness of Roger Waters and David Gilmore of Pink Floyd, or the diversity of sound of the Dave Matthews Band, or even you Dylan lovers but no one man's work ranks higher in the Post WWII era than Paul Simon's, IMHO.

You talking about Ladysmith Black Mambazo?

And Paul Simon is fantastic. Graceland is one of the best albums by any musician period.

Rhythm of the Saints is my next favorite from PS.

By "do no wrong", do you mean, "have never written a shit track"? If you believe any band has never written a shit track, then your head is up your arse, and you have just reached the stage where you convince yourself averything a band release is great. You should grow out of that when you're about 14.

There not bands and they're most definitely not in my age group. But for the quiet moments it would be Neil Diamond or Lionel Richie

wow. way to bring everyone down, Mr Coyote. you habitually insult people like that, or are you in just an extra cranky mood today? smile

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

"Every Time I Die" are very consistent. Each album is good IMO and also well received, critically speaking.

Also, "The Prodigy". I used to think they couldn't top their first album but the most recent "Invaders Must Die" has done that I think.

The Foo Fighters are a bit formulaic but tend to be consistent as do Muse.

CCR,

Interesting choice, and I'd have to think if they've ever really done a "bad" song...I can't think of one offhand...

My favorite band of all time is The Who...I think they're the most incredible band of all time, on a number of levels...

But, can they do no wrong? No, can't say that...not real impressed with a lot of the post-Keith stuff, in spite of Pete's remarkable songwriting talent...

I think you can choose a number of bands that only made one album...you could probably say Derek and the Dominos, for instance, could do no wrong, considering they only put out one album...

If they were still functioning all these years later...I'm quite sure it would be a whole different story...

You know you want it, you know you need it bad...get it now on Amazon.com...

For me, Turin Brakes have consistently produced wonderful stuff. Their first album, The Optimist LP, blew me away.

They are one of my all time favourite bands and I find that they just get better and better with every listen.

Live, they are amazing too (I have tickets to see them in a wee Glasgow venue in November, again!!)

I urge you to check them out!!

This was the first song I ever heard by them and I went straight out and bought the album - I love it even more today than I did back then...

Take a listen smile

So few bands stay together, and hang out together other than to make money.

Some do it cause it's fun.

You know I can't help adding another comment. We've all been using the word band and what comes across is what I would call rock groups - I realise that strictly speaking even that grotty lot One Direction yechhh are a band but the word to me connotes more instruments that just vocals, keyboards, drums and guitars. My father's generation produced some amazing musicians as opposed to the current vogue (and I am part of that) of self taught rock musicians which has prevailed since the 50's. Names like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Bennie Goodman, MJQ, Dave Brubeck etc it would be very difficult for many rock groups to equal their technical virtuosity. In fact the ''biggest band in the world'' would be the first to agree with that.

There's a whole lot more to great music than just technical virtuosity. Many virtuoso musicians make crap music in my mind, because all they want to do is show their skills. Give me an awesome vibe/riff over any virtuous jibberish any time.

And rock groups not being bands? P-lease, the 1940's are long gone and jazz is not the norm to measure everything by.

many of those jazz greats, btw, where self taught - not disagreeing with you, btw, just making sure we get the facts straight smile

Yes, I am talking about Ladysmith Black Mambazo with Joseph Shabalala, but also Raymond Piri on lead guitar (on that album) and so on. He once said that when he heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo that their 11 part harmony intimidated him at first. PS admitting to be intimidated?
Yet he did not back down.
Personally I like Rhythm of the Saints best but admit it is "mellow" and Amazonian, so to speak, and few get into the spiritual chill of their surroundings as much as in a trip down the Amazon. He also admits there that he was "born at the right time."
PS sort of set out on a journey to find the roots of "American" music and found that it came not primarily from Europe, but from Africa, via Brazil perhaps.
Thank you for taking my post in such a positive way!!

My main point wasn't so much to revive the 40's as to what I feel of as a band - not that I think something being modern necessarily means good either and as for the expressions you used they were jazz ones anyway. As Cole Porter wrote ''I'm sure that if, I heard even one riff, it would be more terrif.....ically so''. Your implication is that a lot of jazz players are self indulgent however that also applies to players in other fields but stuff like ''I Don't Get Around Much Anymore'' or Take The A Train can't be considered self indulgent. I also acknowledged that rock groups are technically bands but my point was that in my mind ''band'' conjures up a group of musicians that play more than just guitars. I can remember when the expression ''group'' changed into ''band'' - it was in the late 60's but it still sounds strange to me in this context for the reasons I have stated.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think that goes for any genre/time frame.

True, symphonic rock comes to mind ;)

U2..The most important and influential band of the post-punk era, hard to accuse them of doing much wrong..
Tell me, who was it you left me for? Was it Laszlo, or were there others in between? Or - aren't you the kind that tells?
