One trilogy of books that I love deeply has never been adapted to the screen, and I do hope that eventually someone will do The Fionavar Tapestry justice on the big screen, because I think they would make a fantastic trilogy of fantasy movies.

Really, anything by Guy Gavriel Kay. His historically-based/inspired fantasies would all work well as movies, too. Tigana, for instance, might actually make a better film than Fionavar.

(Footnote: IIRC, a friend took an English lit course on fantasy back at the time Fionavar was just out and the prof actually got Kay in as a guest lecturer.)

I'm a huge fan of his work. I would have to look to see if anything new has come out, but I have read every one of his novels that I know exist. The Last Light of the Sun is a personal favorite, and Sailing to Sarantium blended just the right amount of magic into an alternate history story to completely engage me.

Okay, how has Die Hard not been mentioned yet? Or did I miss someone posting it?

Also:
James Bond
Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory (had to do a quick google search to make sure I wrote the Gene Wlder one)
American Psycho
Yojimbo (I count it as being based on either Red Harvest or Glass Key, both by Dashiell Hammett)

Seriously though, n

I think a lot of people don't know it was based on a book, to be honest. I did but not until after I saw the movie. It certainly was a case of the movie outstripping the book on many fronts so I think people could be forgiven for missing the book.

The Coen brothers' version of True Grit by Charles Portis.

I happened to read the book a short while before their movie came out.
The book is first class. The movie honors it.

The Great Escape. Absolutely legendary movie.

However my favourite movie based on a poem is The Man From Snowy River.

The Spy Who Came In From the Cold - Classic early Le Carre that got a good book adaptation.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People - TV series rather than movies, but both books and adaptations are good. There is a more recent movie of the first but I haven't seen it.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Every time I read it, or saw the movie, I cried. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which book I should memorize for when it happened for real...and it took a long time for me to not demonize firemen.

Defnitely a great one. Both book and movie.

But my pick is Stieg Larsson's Dragon Tattoo Trilogy.

Fair enough, and the deeper you look, the more of those you find. ReAnimator, Cool Hand Luke, Maltese Falcon Forest Gump, Jurassic Park, a good chunk of Hitchcock's top filmography, No Country for Old Men, (Blood Meridian is a better book though) Death Wish, amongst others.

I guess The Shawshank Redemption. A lot of good movies based off Stephen King's books, but that's my favorite. I saw the first Mortal instruments movie, and that wasn't too bad. A few select others are good too.

Yes, yes, and yes and after The Shawshank Redemption I'd go with "The bridges of Madison County". This movie gets me every time.
