I was tempted to say Harry Potter & LOTR/Hobbit. Although the movies are great, they just don't do the books justice.

Kiss Of The Spider Woman (1985) a multi Oscar nominated film based on the novel by Argentine writer Manuel Puig.
It has also been adapted into a play and a musical.
Since my previous post I have read All Quiet on the Western Front. The book is horrifically brilliant.
