What makes music qualify as rock music?

Can we at least agree it needs a fucking guitar?

+5 points if said guitar is electric

+10 points if said electric guitar actually 'rocks'

+10 points if said electric guitar is being rocked by a guy with a cool hairdo

+25 points if said guy with a cool hairdo snorted something before rocking his electric guitar

+100 points if pyrotechnics are involved anyhow

+10,000 points if said cool-hairdo-guy-who-snorted-something burns said electric guitar with said pyrotechnics

Funny tidbit : this guitar (or what remains) was sold for $380,000 at an auction last year.

For me it will always be Muse, because they are Muse.

Genuinely nice lads from Devon, other than being pissed on stage a few times, I've never seen or heard any bad publicity around them ie drugs. There music is genuinely amazing, Matt Bellamy just makes that guitar sing. Also as if this were even possible I have seen them twice now and they are even better live.

Meat Loaf In his heyday that guy was a freaking load.

The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.

He never used to be, but recently I've come Idolise Steven Tyler. Even though they're an old band, Aerosmith has rapidly climbed to my number one band over the last couple of years. There's so many Aerosmith songs that I've fallen in love with. Stevens voicing is fucking AMAZING, he looks as cool as Christmas, and watching his interviews he seems so laid back, chilled, surpisingly eloquent, but also quite badass and out there. Just a total Legend.

Other competitors would be Slash, for simlar reasons

seen them live a few times myself - i am not really a huge fan of rock concerts, but damn, those shows were amazing - loved that pretty much everyone in the audience knew all the words and yeah, i could get behind Matt B being a rock god. smile

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Yessss. This. The man in black was the original. The one, the only Johnny. There were no rock stars until him...love some Johnny Cash. One of my favorites.

Keith Richards Rocks. Yet he is, IMO, understated and underrated.

Oh hell no! ;) It sure can have some guitar, but doesn't need it. Some overdrive may help, but if you've ever heard some mad pumping analogue synths or even the bass tones of a harpsichord for that matter you'll know you don't need a guitar for that.

But the main thing about rock is a (strong) repetitive groove and perhaps an unpolished/raw sound. That's all.

I'm not sure a lot of people would consider this rock music. At least I don't ; it's more experimental to me. Plus, the part that actually sounds like rock is made by this synth that in fact imitates/reproduces the sound of a guitar.

I'm afraid Jimi Hendrix never received the memo that said rock is not supposed to be experimental ;)
