I have been on a foreign movie kick (primarily Irish and Scandinavian) and hoping others can suggest further good films to watch (old or new).

Some films that I liked:

Rare Exports
Ragnorok
Spring, summer, Fall, Winter, ...and Spring
Guardian
In Darkness
Le Nuit de Varennes
King of Hearts
Winters Tale
Escape (Flukt)
Thale (tail)
Hammer of the Gods
Age of Uprising (the legend of Michael Kohlhaas)
The Veteran
The Hundred Foot Journey
The Station Agent
Dark Valley
Jack Taylor Mysteries

What would you recommend?

Not much of an expert on Irish and Scandinavian movies. How are you with Chinese?

Zhang Yimou's early films like Raise the Red Lantern (1991) and Ju Dou (1990) are good, if rather dark, dramas. Not dissing his historical wuxia epics from later in his career, but I find these early gems aren't talked about much any more.

I would highly recommend that you subscribe to Hulu, they have the entire Criterion collection with many classic foreign films.

My favorite soundtrack of all time, just past American Graffiti.

There was a French movie I saw over 20 years ago
and I can't remember the name, but I thought it
was Camille et Claudette, or something like that.

I'm looking but so far have not yet found it.

Darn. I remember I loved it when I watched it
at one of those old movie theatres.

Hopefully, someone knows what I'm talking about.

French:
Le Mepris---Brigitte Bardot at her most stunning
Le Parapluies de Cherborg----Catherine Deneuve's career-launching film
(I could have listed 20 films here)
Should I do another country's films?

A super special THANK YOU, my friend.

This delayed gratification reminds me of a song I had heard on television as a kid.

I recorded it with a cassette tape player, holding the microphone up to the TV speaker,
while the band was live on some music show. I actually meant to record someone else.

The tune stuck in my head, years after I lost the tape. I never remembered who it was
or what the song was called. I only remembered the first 10 or so notes.

Then, on YouTube a few years ago, I found it!

Let Me Be Your Leader, by Nazareth. If you look for it, there is a beginning that
not all versions on YouTube start with. Those first 10 or 15 notes are the ones that
replayed in my head for decades.

I cried when I found it. I cried like I did the
first time I heard, live, a string quartet play Pachelbel's Canon in D.

Powerful, emotional stuff.

Thank you my dear friend for helping me solve this 25 year old puzzle.

Belle de Jour (1967)
....all with Catherine Deneuve and from France
other great French movies:
Diva (1981)
Breathless (1960)
Purple Noon (1960)
Three Colors trilogy...three movies by Krzysztof Kieślowski (Blue, White and Red) who also directed
The Double Life of Véronique (1991)
Them (French: Ils) is a 2006 French-Romanian horror film and a nice change of pace.

A few already mentioned:
Purple Noon (remade as The Talented Mr. Ripley, also good, neither as good as the book)
Susperia (one of the best horror movies ever made - astounding use of color, there is a color-saturated sequence in the middle that takes your breath away)
Repulsion (really early Polanski, great stuff)
Diabolique (remade into a terrible Sharon Stone movie)

Plus:
Talk to Her (anything by Almodóvar, actually)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
The Devil's Backbone
Let the Right One In (not the Anerican remake)
The Bicycle Thief (required viewing)
Breathless (Godard!)
8 1/2
The Killer (great John Woo action movie)
Cinema Paradiso
Seven Samuri (also required viewing)

Now for Scandinavian films:

Let The Right One In (2008) (Verbal is right, the American version is Let Me In, which is okay)-Sweden
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009)and Who Played with Fire and Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, sometimes called The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy-in Swedish with English subtitles. Simply great!

King of Devil's Island (2010) Norwegian-grim but great
Headhunters (2011) Norwegian-not so grim, still great
Insomnia (1997) Norwegian-Remade as Insomnia a 2002 American psychological thriller film with Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank. Takes place in Alaska and is also pretty good.

Pusher (1996) Danish
The Hunt (2012) Danish
(both feature Mads Mikkelsen, as it is apparently illegal to make a movie in Denmark without his inclusion)
Babette's Feast (1987) Danish and made when Mads was to young to be included.

I saw The Hunt recently on my Roku 3. It was pretty good, although the plot had a few holes.

I really liked both versions of this - the American version is an early Christopher Nolan pic (I think SimmerDown had Nolan's Memento listed as one of the worst movies of all time, but I loved it).
