Do you mean Life is Beautiful, Roberto Begnini's WWII classic from 1997?
I really liked Lives of Others, which is German.
Some excellent films have been mentioned. For comedy, I would add the French farce "Les Visiteurs," and for drama, "La Belle Noiseuse." The original "Solaris" from the USSR is quite good, too.
i am a mad movie buff so i have loads.

Lagaan is not only an excellent foreign film but quite possibly the greatest movie about cricket ever made.
Amélie is wonderful as well but it seems as though everyone out there has already seen it.
Most recently I enjoyed Instructions Not Included (No se aceptan devoluciones) but I wouldn't put it at the top of the list.
I can’t think of a good tagline so this will have to do. Suggest a better one for me?
The Duke of Burgundy - Hungary
Ran - Japan - Akira Kurosawa
The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi - Japan - Takeshi Kitano
The Intouchables - France
Stanno Tutti Bene - Italy
Zwartboek (Dutch 2006)
Stalingrad (German 1993)
Ballad of Tara (Iran 1979)
I saw Natalie Portman's "A Tale of Love and Darkness" this past weekend and found it fascinating. True, it is depressing, but the relationships between the characters were so interesting, and I cannot stop thinking about the realities of life for those who may have avoided the genocide in Europe, but had their own hardships living in Israel in those early post-WWII days.
There is a great Korean monster movie called The Host that is reminiscent of old Japanese monster movies. Except, you know, good.
I also liked Baghdad Taxi or Taxi Baghdad or something like that. I mean it's a film about a fucking taxi driver in Baghdad.
And Populaire, for selfish and romantic reasons.
I've been really into Korean movies as of late:
1. The Beauty Inside ("뷰티 인사이드" 2015; a remake of an American rom-com of the same name which I haven't seen but I enjoyed the Korean version)
2. Hot Young Bloods ("피끓는 청춘" 2014; Wikipedia describes it as a teen romantic comedy...I had to Google the end because I was confused, but in general, the writing was well done and the acting was fun)
3. New World ("신세계" 2013; my all-time favourite so far; I don't even want to say there's a twist at the end but there's a twist at the end and I loved it so much I laughed with glee)
4. Cold Eyes ("감시자들" 2013; I sympathized for the villainous character which was surprising)
5. As One ("코리아" 2012; based on a true story about Korea's unification through ping pong at the Olympics)
6. A Muse ("은교" 2012; the acting is great and the story is thought provoking; the girl's role was a breakthrough for the actress)
7. Hello Ghost ("헬로우 고스트" 2010; a comedy; touching; the end had me bawling because I didn't see it coming)
8. Oldboy ("올드보이" 2003; this one disturbed me greatly...won a lot of film festival awards but take that fact with a large grain of salt if you decide to watch it)
If you only end up watching one film from this list, choose New World.
