What are some great movie remakes? Not necessarily better than the original, but still good movies in their own right.

I'll start off by saying the Kurosawa/Western Exchange as seen in Red Harvest/Glass Key --> Yojimbo --> Fistful of Dollars (also Last Man Standing (which is also a weird one, since it's officially a remake of Yojimbo, but really just an adaptation of Red Harvest(also Last Man Standing suuuucks))) and then Seven Samurai --> Magnificent Seven also Unforgiven (1992) --> Unforgiven (2013) if they count, they're all pretty awesome.

Other than those, True Grit Coen brothers remake is great, as is Departed (remake of Infernal Affairs) The Thing (Carpenter remake of Thing from Another World, not 2011)

What are some of your favorites?

I thought the original was super scary when I was young. But recently I went back and it didn't hold up. The new one was great. I was super high when I watched it though.

John Carpenter's 1982 version of The Thing... The Fly... Invasion Of The Body Snatchers... Ben Hur, with Charlton Heston(remake of the silent film version)... To Be Or Not To Be

Not a movie, but I thought Bates Motel was an excellent take on Psycho.

Amen to these. Actually, the Abel Ferrara remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, title just Body Snatchers, from 1993 is pretty good, too (I assume you're referring to the 1978 Philip Kaufmann version starring Donald Sutherland). It leans into teen angst and 1980s-90s suburbia and is actually pretty good, even if it still comes third after the classic 1978 and 1956 versions. Gabrielle Anwar is the lead.

Never saw the original Scarface, but loved the 1983 one with Al Pacino. Same thing with the 1991 Cape Fear in that I never saw the original. De Niro was top level creepy in that.

I did seek out the original after seeing the remake. It is also very good in its own way. Doesn't lean into psychological horror the way the remake did, more of a straight noir thriller. But the remake has definitely become more iconic for my generation and later.

On TV, the reimagining of Battlestar Galactica. While I remain fond of the original, it was a bit of a hot mess with maybe 1 in 3 or 4 episodes actually being good (many were straight-up ripoffs of movie plots) and so-so writing. The remake was much tighter on quality, put more thought into the ongoing storyline, and had some fantastic writing and acting.

I did that in high school. I was the dentist.

They are actually doing a new version with Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson.

Huh, what? Not that they are doing Little Shop again. After all, there's already two movies and a stage show. But that casting? I mean, Rick Moranis was perfect for Seymour and Ellen Greene had done the role of Audrey on stage before doing it on screen. I just can't see these two in those roles (maybe Scarlett, who has a fairly wide range, but not Evans).

On topic, De Palma's The Untouchables. While it was nominally a remake of the old TV show which in turn was nominally based on history, it is really it's own very unique thing. While I am not a fan of Costner, the supporting case (Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, etc.) more than made up for his presence.

Probably the most recent I have seen is the recent German production of All Quiet on the Western Front.
