A lot of great names here. Not sure I truly have a favorite, but as I mellow with age, I am liking Mark Knoffler more and more. A bit more subtle than many here, but the dude can make a guitar talk!
My nephew who is learning to play online.
I adore Rodrigo y Gabriela - I've been lucky enough to see them live twice (if you ever get the chance - GO!)

They're both wonderful guitarists in their own right but together? Man, they're like a well-oiled machine! They're both so pretty too - lovely to watch and listen to.

I've got a lot of favourite guitarists, including Matt Bellamy of Muse (who seems to be hugely skilled at many instruments and has an amazing voice)

I may come back and add some more later!
Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page each in his personnal way.
Would have loved to see/hear them together

here 'ya go. Abracadabra!
Hendrix, Vai, Prince....the list is pretty much endless...

(but then there are guys like Michael Angelo Batio.....wtf....)

Ack. Can't believe I forgot the late Jeff Healey on my list.

I saw Jeff play a short set at a record store to promote his first album.
The band was SOOOO loud that chunks of the ceiling starting falling down!
Rock and roll!!!
My favorite is Tommy Bolin. Many people in the business in the early 70's put him in the "Next Jim Hendrix" class. He died way too young at 26, but had an amazing amount of music compressed into about ten years.
Sorry guys. I'm going to be the lame one and say, 'Chet Atkins' again.
Happiness is not an outcome or an entitlement. It is not tangible and it is not purchasable. It is a conscious decision, it is a state-of-mind, it is a choice you make at every crossroad.
Andrés Segovia.

He was a terrific player. Just doesn't make my list because I'm not really into country (don't hate on it necessarily, just doesn't float my boat save for the odd artist or song here and there).

He definitely was a great one and did a few performances alongside Chet Atkins. smile. Great stuff.

Well, to be honest, it wasn't just the genre of his music. It was more of the clarity of his notes, his technique and his innovative spirit with the guitar - he had class in his performances. I'm sorry if this seems a bit pretentious but it's honestly how I feel! I'm more of an indie-music guy, but it's his style of playing that appeals to me, not the genre of his music smile. But yes, I understand your opinion. I just felt the need to clarify mine.

I'm not really into country either.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Michael Hedges (December 31, 1953 – December 2, 1997)
Recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheater 1986

Not my absolute favorite, but since he hasn't been mentioned.
I've always loved Hank Williams. I met his son once years ago because we had the same theatrical manager. He is one of the best five-finger pickets I've heard.

Can't remember the names but there were several classical and flamenco guitarists I used to listen too. I'll have to look them up again.

I also like the Russian balalaika and the Japanese one whose name I'll have to look up again. But then bag-pipes, especially the Scottish pipes, are my favorite. The Irish ones are OK too.
I am always a gentleman.
Eric Clapton.

Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"[2] and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time".[3]
Surprised how little Brian May and Angus Young have been mentioned. Truly two unbelievable guitarist who know how to put on an incredible show!
Gretchen Menn and Jimmy Paige
