Not a fan of awards shows in general. I do find it interesting that made-for-cable and direct-to-streaming shows together now dominate the major categories. The over-the-air networks are really going to have to step up their game or they will be completely shutout before too long.

I agree. Networks just can't keep up.

Nobody these days wants to sit through some 22 minute G-rated sitcom interspersed with commercials for razor blades and dick pills. The reason cable/streaming show do better is because of the fact that they are objectively better. We don't need to settle for another one hour drama with dialogue that seems written by a child. Oz and The Sopranos started it and now we no longer have to look back.

We are done with episodic dramas with formulaic plotlines. Network dramas featuring the same rehashed storylines with sexy Doctors and funny lawyers has some to an end.

Awards show are bullshit, but for the sake argument and this thread let's pretend that they aren't just ways of major studios doing a circle jerk. Let's pretend that we, the viewers, are actually choosing the winners.

I think it's important to acknowledge that these studios act in the same way as politicians. It's a campaign. Hulu has been sending "Handmaids" out in LA as a marketing technique. Nothing wrong per say... but this is just an exaggeration of what has been going on for years.

Awards show are bullshit.

Still fun to delve into the process and predict the winners...
I can't predict the winners. It's a popularity contest with the TV and Hollywood world.

I really enjoyed Westworld. I like Better Call Saul, though not quite as good as Breaking Bad.

They keep turning me down for being an extra in Atlanta. I think it's my costume. You know, a Pope hat, shirtless with football pads, a speedo, a red cape, masquerade mask, and cowboy boots.

Anthony Hopkins was outstanding in Westworld, as he always is, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him win. But I especially would like to see Jeffrey Wright win for playing Bernard in Westworld. I thought he was great. Evan Rachel Wood was great in that too.

I am addicted to The Fargo series, so would like to see that get some love. Ewan McGeregor played twin brothers, so that's a twist that usually plays big in these award shows.

And Last Week with John Oliver.

I would've liked to seen more nominations for Ray Donovan.

I have to apologize as I haven't seen more than 2 episodes ever of House of Cards. Those looked great but I just haven't had time to expand my viewing but certainly plan to go back and catch that series sometime.
I thought Legion deserved a few nods.

Aubrey Plaza for supporting actress. She was genuinely frightening and sexy as fuck.

And outside of Ewan, I thought Dan Stevens had the most complex and just plain weird performance.

Carrie Coon deserves the win for her performance in Fargo.

That's all I got.
were Orphan Black and 13 Reasons Why not on there because of when they were aired, or just snubbed? Both were brilliant. Legion, also, as MM said, should have gotten a nod.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I agree. Fargo Season 3 was great. It's in a limited category so I would be surprised if it doesn't win. And Ewen grew an actual potbelly for one bath scene. Aside from Christian Bale in "The Machinist", its the biggest actual natural physical transformation I've ever seen in a movie or TV show.

John Oliver is hands down the best in that category. It's pretty much the only show on TV that can actually make me laugh out loud. And it has an intelligence that probably makes Jimmy Fallon go back to doing tricycle races or pie eating contests...or whatever other stupid shit he does now to turn the Tonight show into a 3rd grader's birthday party.

I love Ray Donovan, but I felt that the last couple seasons dropped off a bit from the first two. (The season 5 premiere comes out tonight). Still one of the most underrated shows on TV.

House of Cards is probably one of the most overrated shows on TV (After Homeland.)

All in all, pretty good picks Buzz.

I'd add in Veep as the best written comedy series. Their insult writing makes mine pale in comparison....

"The Machinist" was a phenomenal piece of acting. It reminded me a little of De Niro in "Raging Bull", where he gained 70 lbs for the role.

I watched the first episode of "House of Cards" and it didn't grab me. And I'm a Kevin Spacey fan (massive tip of the hat to him helping save London's "The Old Vic"). I must revisit it at some stage, as people still rave about it. Perhaps I'm a little over politics right now anyway, which is swaying my judgement.

I looked through the list of nominees. I really rate Charlie Brooker's writing and insight. His "Black Mirror" series was superb. A frighteningly stark interpretation of where our society and social media in particular, are heading.

I agree. I enjoyed (House of Cards) for the first two seasons but cannot get through season 3. Homeland should have ended after the third season, but I will say the second season of that show was the most entertaining/intense TV watching I have ever had.

Yeah...that's a real picture. 120 lb Christian Bale.

Black Mirror is awesome as well. The newer seasons are especially great. I like the fact that each episode is an individual stand alone story.
I'd like to see these two win. They are a couple of my favorite shows.

Outstanding Drama Series

-Westworld

Outstanding Comedy Series

-Silicon Valley
Not an Emmy, but just as good, Thandie Newton is nominated for The Golden Globes' Best Supporting Actress for Westworld. She was one of my favorites for sure in that series. She's damn sexy yummy and she has a sexy voice to go with the entire sexy package. She was awesome as Maeve Millay.

Results are in. The awards actually had the second worst ratings of all time for an Emmys broadcast. Just one more nail in the coffin for network TV.

Saturday Night Live was the big winner (most of which was undeserved). The anti-Trump band wagon has allowed Alec Baldwin to win the best supporting actor award for doing the same comical skit once or twice ever three weeks times while actual supporting actors contribute week after week.

The surprise of the night was "Big Little Lies." It was a good miniseries with an outstanding cast. (Even the kids in the show were amazing.). It certainly wasn't better that "The Night Of" or "Fargo" though.

Did you agree with the decisions? Who do you think got snubbed?
