No, they will not know you have them blocked, it doesn't show them a message or anything to let them know you have them blocked.

Purely from a personal viewpoint I see no real purpose to them other than taking up space that could be used for something else. I don't know if others feel the same way?

We already have this feature. When viewing your messages, just click on the envelope to the left of the message and it marks it as unread.
