Review: Gigi Hard Wax Kit

I've tried just about every technique to get rid of my pubic hair in the past (shaving, depilatory creams, at-home hair-removal kits, etc.). However, I always reverted to just shaving with my electric shaver as these other techniques weren't effective at all for me. I also never considered getting waxed professionally at a salon as I thought that the fees were a bit too costly for what they were really worth, especially since I generally leave a bit of hair anyway.

A few months ago however, I met a girl that work in a salon through mutual friends. We discussed about waxing and she told me that the kit that she uses for her clients is actually available to anybody for a very low price (around $40). She gave me the reference and when I got back home, I checked different kits on Amazon from this brand called Gigi.

The main item in those kits is the Wax Warmer, but many different kits are available with various added accessories, depending on your goal or your chosen method: Brazilian Waxing Kit, Mini Pro Waxing Kit, Facial Hair Removal Honee Wax Kit, etc.

The one I was interested in was the Brazilian Waxing Kit, which contains hard wax and that can remove hair without the need of strips. As I don't live in the US though, I had a hard time ordering the correct kit and had to order the accessories separately. Essentially, I only ordered the Wax Warmer and the Brazilian Body Hard Wax, and simply bought some wooden sticks at my local drugstore.

The complete kit contains:

1 wax warmer with cover
1 Brazilian body hard wax (14 ounce)
10 large accu edge applicators
10 small accu edge applicators
10 petite applicators
1 pre epilation oil (2 ounce)
1 post wax cooling gel (2 ounce)
1 Brazilian waxing instructional DVD

I received the hard wax fairly rapidly, but had a great deal of trouble receiving the Wax Warmer (the company from which I initially ordered it from never shipped it and I got a refund from Amazon). At least this gave me some time to let my hair grow at a sufficient length for waxing (around 1/4-inch). I finally received it just last week, and tested it during the weekend.

First, I placed the hard wax in the warmer and set the warmer at high intensity for around 40-45 minutes. This is only to melt the wax properly, then it is instructed to set the warmer at low intensity for the rest of the application (professionals who use it in a salon can also let the warmer heat at low intensity during the whole day):

When the wax seemed melted properly, I applied some baby oil on my pubis so that the wax wouldn't stick to my skin all that much (this is pretty much the same as using the 'pre epilation oil' that's included in the complete kit).

Time to finally test my skills at waxing. For those who don't know much about waxing with hard wax, here's how it should be done:

When I pulled the very first strip of wax, I was greatly impressed: that thing really removes all the hair without hurting all that much. I continued waxing my complete pubic region, except from my balls. The most difficult part to do was definitely the contour of my penis, especially below it and at the sides: the skin there is rather loose and the hair tends to be coarser, which can be a bit strenuous/painful. I then removed the (very few) remaining hair with tweezers, which were mostly located between my penis and my balls. The complete process took me around 1 hour to achieve (excluding the time necessary to initially melt the wax in the warmer).

I was extremely satisfied with the result and the technique is rather easy to master too; it didn't make a mess at all either (and I'm usually quite clumsy). Plus, the wax remained at the right temperature during the whole process, I didn't have to adjust the warmer at all. Only one concern though: it seems like some hair were 'cut' just below my skin rather than being removed completely from the follicle. I know this as I can feel them, as if they were freshly shaved. This is most probably due to my inexperience however, or the fact that my hair isn't really used to getting waxed. Technically, this is the exact same product/procedure that professional salons use, so the blame is undoubtedly on my part. I'll keep improving my technique and will keep you informed.

Also, I applied wax rather generously and only used about 1/8 of the hard wax. Considering that ordering the hard wax only costs me around $15.00, this represents a cost of less than $2.00 / waxing. Definitely a bargain compared to the $40-60 that Brazilian waxing usually costs!

I highly recommend this product. Feel free to ask questions if you have any!
That's brave of you to do your own Brazilian.

I tried once with a wax kit, but then chickened out at the last minute and went to the salon. I ended up going online to check reviews on the kit and saw all these 'do-it-yourself' pube waxing gone wrong horror stories and freaked myself out. lol

I actually received a medal for my exemplary courage:

All joking aside, I too have tried some of those at-home waxing kits, and they were just horrible:

First I've tried those mini-strips that are pre-coated with wax and that you need to heat. Fuck, that really was a bad experience. I had to heat each individual strip with a hair dryer for like 1 minutes before applying it. And they only removed about half of the hair, hurt as hell and left a sticky residue on my skin. I had to remove all the remaining hair with tweezers; the total procedure took me like 3 hours and I was in constant pain. I managed to wax that way only once, then threw what remained of the kit in the garbage.

Then I bought a wax-roller that you need to put in the microwave. I heated it as I was supposed to, then tried to apply a band of wax on my skin; that thing was barely 'rolling' and it made a complete mess. Plus, I figured that I'd need to reheat the roller every 5 minutes, which was just unrealistic and a real pain in the ass. I just instantly removed the mess that it created on my pubis, and threw that thing in the garbage.

Really, all those amateurish at-home kits aren't quite realistic and usable; they're just meant to make you spend some money before realizing that you've been duped. I really couldn't see anyone waxing that way on a regular basis. The thing is, you need to have a constant supply of wax that's at just the perfect temperature, and that wax has to be of fairly high quality.

The Gigi kit that I bought provided that magnificently: it's very professional. If you read/listen to their instructions either on their website or on their videos, they actually mention how to use it 'with your clients'. There really isn't any difference compared to professional waxing, you just need to do the job yourself.

I can understand how it can be inconvenient for a girl that needs to wax the contour of her lips and her butt crack however. Myself, I only wax my pubis and everywhere around my penis; I simply shave my balls and my ass every morning in the shower.

If you have a friend that you're comfortable with and that's skilled in those things, you could easily wax each other though. That or you could attempt it with your boyfriend/partner. As I mentioned in my review, the technique is very easy to master: there really isn't a lot of ways you could mess it up.

Haha, I might actually attempt it on a few girls myself. One of them simply shaves and leaves a landing strip. I might only try to wax her upper pubis at first; it will at least save her that trouble when she shaves.

I still need to propose it though.
I've tried the self-waxing thing as well. As Doll said, kudos. Your bravery is more than mine. These days, I let the pros do my waxing for me. It's worth it to me, especially when doing the harder to reach places.

As for the 'cut hairs' that you described, this is actually a fairly common thing for me as well, even having it done at the salon. I'm terrible about maintaining the habit, though, so have gone long stretches without getting waxed. Everything I have heard and read indicates that as your hair gets 'used' to being waxed, it will extract better and less painfully.

I imagine that for the first four or six months, you'll have to do what's called a 'clean up' session, where you get the cut hairs during a mini waxing session.

One thing I have learned about waxing, be sure to exfoliate the waxed area frequently. Exfoliation helps prevent ingrown hairs, which can be painful and unsightly.

Good luck with your waxing endeavor! :-)

Thanks for that info.

And yeah, I figured I would need to do something with those few remaining hairs in a short while. Maybe I'll just lightly shave until the rest of my hair grows back, then I'll let it all grow together and wax it again.

I was quite satisfied with the result though. I've heard about the hair 'getting used' to being waxed too, but still my very first time (or second if you count that Nair experience) was rather painless.

Also, I performed this on Saturday, November 1st, and still the hairs that were 'cut' didn't really grow back: they still feel 'freshly shaved'. And no ingrown hairs thus far (I was already exfoliating before).
A quick update to report my second experience with this product...

So, after almost exactly 1 month, my hair grew back to an appropriate length to be waxed again (around 1/4"). This time around, I wanted to leave a bit of hair because I usually prefer it that way (and a girl complained about my 'juvenile look').

Before waxing, I took a temporary black marker and traced a line to extend my Adonis belt (or V-Abs), as such:

I was a bit afraid that tracing a nice defined line would be hard to achieve with the wax, but it worked perfectly: with the wooden sticks, I was able to apply wax precisely on the predefined line, and when I pulled on it to remove the hair, the waxed/unwaxed line really was precise and perfect.

I also applied wax all around the base of my shaft to remove all the hair on it, and again, it was really easy to achieve and to trace the contour of my dick. For some reason, applying hot wax all over my pubic region makes me rather horny and I had a big hard-on while doing this, but I figured that being erect was quite convenient to wax my shaft properly: the skin tends to be much less loose and it's much easier to pull the wax.

This time around, I really seem to have removed the hair completely, my skin is very soft. I'm not sure if it's because my hair is getting used to being waxed or if the hair at the 'sides' of my pubis is easier to remove than in the 'central' region, but I'm very satisfied with the results.

I love that new look too, I'll probably keep waxing that way. It takes less time to wax and it's much sexier as it puts emphasis on my Adonis belt; I have this sexy defined 'V' that's pointing right at my dick.

This put me off too...I'd bought the kit but totally psyched myself out. Plus the lady I use is fantastic and I shamelessly enjoy all the gossip she divulges about beauty salon politics.

More power to you SP! For me, it'll always be worth the extra pounds and pennies!
