Since I'm fairly new at this, I am finding that many of my stories seem to be very similar and I'm curious if anyone has fallen into this type of "habit". And if anyone would have any good suggestions or comments on the stories I've posted so far. This way it will help me improve my writing, I appreciate any help you can provide. And don't worry I am looking for criticism and etc.

thanks

Rob
Like all literature, there are only so many basic types of stories out there (I'll leave you to do your own research on those - it's pretty boring). The trick, as it has been for centuries, is to weave the story with things like interesting characters, surprise, and well-crafted storytelling.

Give two writers the same basic situation and they will write you two different stories, hopefully equally interesting. A talented writer could write the same basic story many times and still make them interesting by using character, situations, etc. to set them apart. Take a look at the bestseller shelves next time you're in a bookstore. How many writers have been pedaling the same basic story with different variables for years?

My advice it to worry less about writing the "same" story, and think about how you can use the elements of your story to set it apart.
I don't know if this is funny, or just weird, but many of my stories are about , and yet I have no interest in that type of sexual relationship. Very odd that I would find a great following and the ability to have a natural flow with this genre. Something just clicks in my mind.

My inspiration, whatever the genre is, are scenarios, or even just a type of caress or image of a woman that slips into my mind. I create an entire story around a feeling, or a woman, and go from there.

I have never copied another author's story, but there are times when I read a story and there is a moment, a description, or a subtle action that sparks my mind and gives me fodder. Try putting yourself in a different room, or outside, or in different situations from which you can let your ideas flow.
Different situations will alter the thing, scenes and themes, or even eras. Experimentation is good exercise in writing. Exp: incorporating totally different things to make something: computers and sex? Nevertheless, make sure you enjoy what you write or how can it be a success if you yourself despise it? smile
I know this is gonna sound really weird but I've noticed that I write differently depending on what I use to write with. I'm not talking about handwriting wise but stylistically. One of my stories I wrote completely on my phone and it's pretty different from most of my other stories. I find my style changing even depending on what keyboard or pen that I use (though I seldom handwrite my stories because my writing is rather hieroglyph-esque). I know this sounds weird but when ASubtlepassion mentioned taking yourself away from your normal place of writing, it just made me remember this bit of strangeness. It may help to write with a pen or pencil if you usually use a computer or vice versa.
This was a really good question! I'm new to this as well - I've written two stories for Lush, and am currently writing my third. I can really identify with your difficulty, because my stories are chapters involving the same two characters. In an effort to not write "similar" stories each time, I'm trying instead to tell the story of a relationship. It's only sexual, not romantic, and kind of falls into the category of an obsession, but I'm exploring the lengths to which these two people will go, in every confrontation... something that sets the next "confrontation" apart from the last, and amps up the sexual energy.

I'm not sure how successful I've been, and I'm worried about how I'm going to end it, or even if I'm going to end it at all. But I've forgotten that I have this huge resource of accomplished Lush authors on whom to draw for advice! Thanks for asking this question. smile
A few hopefully helpful tips, so to speak.

Character drives story and circumstances drive plot. The plot of a story is what happens on the outside; character development/story is what happens inside (inside the characters/inside the author/inside the reader). One of the reasons porn is terrible for erotic fiction is there is really no deep character development, despite the attempts to rationalize this with pseudo-stories such as "Suddenly, she discovered she was a slut!" or "The right cock was there all the time, under her nose!"

By changing the circumstances (events, settings, tradition, culture, etc etc) your story (how the characters go about what they do and why) can appear "different" even if the characters essentially do the same things. Do you fuck the same way in Paris as you do in Des Moines, Iowa? What changes, if anything? And why does it change? People's personalities, moods, etc. change as well and that can alter how and why they do or not do something.

One of the simpler suggestions for fiction is: Get your character up a tree, then throw rocks at them. Get them in a perilous predicament and start pushing obstacles in the way, meanwhile they are trying to accomplish their goal.
