You mean like the briefcase in Pulp Fiction - something that drives the plot but has no relevance to the story? Not sure how you'd use it in the short stories on here.

I think people use it without realizing.

Then you've answered your own question, dear Danni smile

I'm not aware of reading any stories that use McGuffins, have you an example in mind?

The blue dress in my story The Blue Dress is a classic McGuffin. It's role in the story is somewhat incidental to the plot, yet gives focus to the story, while not being intrinsically essential to the narrative.

Obviously the title makes its importance appear more relevant than it actually is.

I know this is all a bit abstruse, but I want to get people thinking about their writing.

I do see your point Danny, but having read your story I would add that the blue dress of the title is not just a strong visual image (almost filmic) but also a vivid symbol; of lost love and life. However I do like the idea of discussing McGuffins and other literary techniques!
I've used them once or twice in novels but not in short stories. Giving that a try might make an interesting writer challenge.

I try not to, but sometimes make a character a living McGuffin without said character the story can't progress even if it's a bit role in the tale.

That's it. I wanted to stimulate people to think about their writing. I think it's so important to constantly challenge our limits and comfort zone (within reason).
