I don't use Word! Thought it might be useful to some people who write in flat files.

Thanks to our programming guru, here a useful tool that enables you to calculate the number of words and characters in a given body of text

http://www.lushstories.com/resources/count-characters.aspx

Good morning, it may be just me but I recently submitted a 100 word story. When I tried to upload it, it was rejected. It said that my story had 112 words. I started to doubt myself, to the point that I actually printed off my story and manually counted each word, several times. 100 words each time. The story was a text exchange between two people. To more easily separate both parties I did one of them in bold. That’s where the problem was. Once I removed the formatting it went back to 100 words and accepted my story. Is it just me being stupid (most likely possibility) or are lines in bold counted twice? Thank you, regards, Verity

It's entirely possible that formatting isn't stripped out when the word count is performed. That should be fixed if it's the case, and might account for the frustrations people have with the total being "off". Good bit of sleuthing there.

Please browse my digital bookshelf. In this collection, you can find 124 full stories, 10 micro-stories, and 3 poems with the following features:

* 30 Editor's Picks, 80 Recommended Reads.
* 16 competition podium places, 11 other times in the top ten.
* 23 collaborations.
* A whole heap of often filthy, tense, hot sex.

Thank you. Yes, I'm sure the formatting word "bold" in a sentence is counted as an actual word. It probably doesn't matter in 99.9% of cases but if you are relying on getting a story into a word limited category it could be a problem. Anyway, if no fix is available, at least now I understand why a story gets rejected. Regards, Verity

I have been using the word and character counter at https://charactercounttool.com/ myself, but I;m sure this one is good as well. Just another option if anyone wants to use it! It never hurts to have a backup! smile

Thank you. The problem isn't counting words. The problem is the story editor appears to be counting formatting words as story words. It appears for example if type the word "the" in standard text it counts as one word. If you type the word "the" in bold, it counts as two words. Hope that makes sense. Regards, Verity

Are you formatting outside Lush then pasting it in or using the Lush editor? I write in plain text and when I add bold or italic after pasting, I do not see an increase in word count. There is a bug in the counting, which is especially noticeable in Micros, but that isn't related to formatting and remains a mystery.

Yes, I wrote the plain text outside Lush. Then I put it into the Lush editor but added bold to separate the lines. Then it went from 99 to 112 words and was rejected. Once I removed the bold it went back to 99 words. I can't think of any other reason other than a bug in the formatting. Regards, Verity

This is my latest story, edited in Lush. The word count says 99. I click next and publish and it says I've used 102 words?????????
