Brindle's Writing Tip #001

I thought I would share some writing tips that I had the great fortune to have shared with me by published authors. I believe in paying it forward. Whether your interest is just for fun, or to hone your craft to seek paid publication, I hope these little tidbits will help.

Tips #001

Grammar is very important in presentation. Whether just to share a story here or when compiling a query for a publisher. No one expects perfect grammar, or I'd be totally screwed. *lol* ... But having as correct of grammar as possible, is always better. It reads smoother and more importantly, it reads precisely the way you mean. Publishers have been known to skip great stories, because the query contained too many errors.

Today's tip is on dialogue punctuation.

Do you end a piece of dialogue with a comma or with a period? Both are used with dialogue. But each is used in specific cases.

Here's a sample dialogue.

1. "Hi, Jane," Dick said.
2. "Hi, Dick."
3. "How are you?" Dick was curious how Jane's day had gone.

1. Notice I used a comma after the first piece of dialogue "Hi, Jane,"... this is because there is a qualifier "said" following. Dick said is part of the same sentence as "Hi, Jane" Therefore the period to end the sentence comes at the end of that sentence. A comma is used to show the sentence has not ended.

2. Notice a period was used. Because there was no qualifier following what was spoken, the sentence ends there, therefore a period is needed.

3. Notice I used a period again, but there is more text following. The sentence ended after "you". The "Dick was curious..." is a new sentence and separate from the first. So a period is used, even though it relates to the dialogue.

Make sense? Questions? Is this useful? Did I just waste a monumental amount of your time? *lol*

This is useful Brindle. I'm guilty of punctuation errors myself, even now.

We're putting together an article library of "writer's tips", (or should that be "writer's tips,"?) so we can add these and any other quick tips to the library if you grant permission to do so

I'd be honored. I like to keep them to one little tidbit at a time. If you try to cram too many lessons in one shot, some of it seeps through the cracks... at least for people like me, who can barely remember their own phone#. *lol*

Thanks Brindle, you did not waste time...I know I make mistakes with the dialogue stuff, and this was good...
I probably should have stayed awake in English class when I was younger...but, who knew there would be erotic story sites on the net someday???

I am curious to know why a (?) was not used at the end of a question, instead of a period in example #3. Probably when I find the rule it will make sense to me.

I think it should have had a question mark rather than a period.
LOL...Jeff, you are so good...I guess that's why you're a moderator...
See, I would have thought to use three questions marks...ain't this be right???
I guess Nicola is going to have to revoke Brindle's teaching certificate after all...

Yes, indeed, you are both correct. It should have been a question mark.

Considering the toronto asian escort above mentioned, we can come to the conclusion that to give up wisely is a kind of more toronto escort mature life attitude. Though giving up toronto asian escorts sometimes is painful and costly,in the long run toronto escorts what we gain will definitely far out weight what we lose.

It should be "writers' tips," with the comma inside the quotation marks and the apostrophe following the "s" (assuming the tips are intended to help more than one writer). Commas and periods go inside quotation marks under Associated Press style.

Actually, it rather depends upon which version of the English language you're referring to, too.
