I fancied reading some contemporary mainstream fiction in order to see where modern-day prose was at, to try to hone my craft for a modern market.

The reviews were good and so I went for this:

Seven Lies:
by Elizabeth Kay

According to the Amazon blurb, "The most addictive, page-turning thriller of 2020."

If that's the case, 2020 has so far not been a good year for thrillers.

It's okay, and I've nearly finished it. Having said that, a book has to be particularly bad before I abandon it. It has been a bit of a chore.

Good modern day fiction I've read recently, in my humble opinion:
Dare Me, by Megan Abbott
Outside Looking In, by T C Boyle
Reamde and Fall, Neil Stephenson

Me? Reading A Head Full of Ghosts. Scary as f.

Thanks, Verbs. I appreciate the pointers. I've not read any of the authors you mention.

I used to read vast amounts of contemporary horror back in the late seventies. All the usual names, King, Laymon, etc.

These days I don't read so much for visceral chills, more the way an author can dismantle our certainties about the world. I love Thomas Ligotti.

But if the prose is exceptional, I will read a book no matter what the genre.

Having read the blurb and peeked inside, A Headful of Ghosts might do for me nicely. I have a couple of things to read set aside but will probably read this sometime soon. So, thanks for the recommendation.

Interesting book!

I am currently reading "Fangzhieh Ribao" ("Liberation Daily") from 1945-46 for my next book on China.
Books/newspapers from 1945-46 in any alien language for us can really test our skills. This one is what I call a "Nutcracker!" A lot has changed in China in the last 75 years!!
