A (7, 8 or 9 syllables)
A (7, 8 or 9)
B (5 or 6)
B (5 or 6)
A (7, 8 or 9)
Remember that lines 1, 2, & 5 (A) must all be the same meter (if line 1 is 7 syllables, the other two must be as well)
And lines 3 & 4 (B) must be the same meter

It's not just the number of syllables and the rhyme scheme, that make a limerick, there is a pretty standardised meter for them as well.
These are the ones most used, the ones that fit in limerick songs, where DUM indentifies the syllables with emphasis :
taDUMta taDUMta taDUMta or
tadaDUM tadaDUM tadaDUM (ta) for lines 1, 2 and 5 and
taDUMta taDUM or
tadaDUM tadaDUM for lines 3 and 4

B) He cracked open a book
B) For a recipe to cook
A) But his wife just wanted to grind
I appreciate both of your comments, I had a friend add this thread for more the enjoyment of being part of a limerick than the rules, eg. Roses Are Red the thread is more fun than particle. - He made a mistake and put it in the pub section first, use that one for rules and leave this one for top of your head pleasure.
If you can see yourselves being with a bunch of Limerick butchers you are always more than welcome to join in

Absolutely!
Good stuff.
Do we now hold ourselves to a higher standard?
